Sounds like you are getting away with it surprisingly well Dave, but most UK cars on standard ECU would go silly on a 0.8mm restrictor. Some people think I am paranoid about boost spikes, but they are usually the guys with intercoolers the size of football pitches and turbos the sizes of buses. For a diddly turbo with an inadequate intercooler a boost spike can throw in a very unwelcome slug of hot air into your engine. The size of the spikes can also vary in different conditions.

The P1 runs much lower duty cycles for the wastegate solenoid - like 45 rather than 70% for example - because of this different sized restrictor.

Undoubtedly the quicker spool up and higher boost in the lower gears is welcome, but the Dawes will control it a lot better for you and be adjustable too.

It is just very puzzling Dave - with the same duty cycles I typically had the following boost with a decat and the standard turbo and AE801 ECU with a fuel cut lifter. Clearly I didn't hold the last one very long. I just think you would be better with a Dawes - it is only £35 and will drive much better. Without the FCD the peak boost would not quite reach the second two figures as the ECU throws a wobbly and pulls it back but not as nice to drive as reaching target properly.

1.2 15 PSI
1.1 18 PSI
1.0 20 PSI

on my MY00 uk spec

Got 220bhp and 210lb/ft at a rolling road session with a magnex back box and ITG filter. The operator reported it running rich

Decided to make some changes ;)

Now running

PE twin dump dp
magnex centre
scorpion back box (just to keep the noise down)
itg filter
ae800 ecu
P1 olive

using a electronice boost gauge 1.15 peak normally around 1.05 - 1.1

using optimax ... Is this a safe combination ... do I run any danger of detentation, and should I run octane booster.

Got another rolling road sess to see what power its got

Thoughts more than welcomed :)

Dave :D

john banks 06 September 2002 09:09 AM

Sounds nice. Should not det with that spec - get a knocklink if you want peace of mind, but if all the sensors are working at this stage not necessary. Look out for higher boost spikes in colder weather though.

What is the P1 olive?

DemonDave 06 September 2002 09:36 AM

John, thanks for the reassurance.

The P1 olive is the restrictor in a pipe. The p1 has a smaller bore, it gets to higher boost quicker .... that what I was told .. it does make the car feel more urgent !

What about octance booster...would you recommend it and if so which one ?

Ta

Dave. :)

Hi Dave

Still confused with the double emails but I hope your keeping well. Anyway thought you might like to know that there is a thread on GTR, its a bit long but fantastic reading. I personally use NF, but in reality combined with Optimax it really only makes about 99.2 RON. But if you read this thread, it probably just stops the ECU retarding by disguising Knock, and the car runs great, but thats not to say the engines not knocking. Hope it helps, oh and if you get the idea from the thread of making your own booster, you cant store toluene unless licensed and they wont supply if not. (all will become clear when you read the thread.

Give me a call if you need to regards our conversation a couple of days ago.

dave, you've been busy, intresting to see what you get on the RR

I thought it did sound like your boost was spiking a little high hence my comment about cold weather. The P1 restrictor is 0.8mm (IIRC) vs 1.2mm in the MY00. I am surprised your boost is not MUCH higher or oscillating in a very underdamped fashion. With crazy boost control that may result from this I can't say it will be safe - poor boost control and fast rate of rise with spikes alone can cause det, some of which the ECU ignores, so I would suggest putting the original restrictor back in unless you have a knocklink. Use a Dawes - the driving experience will be far superior and you would be able to hold 1.1 bar happily.

John, I have only seen 1.15 once ! set the warning to 1.1 and have never heard it .... don't feel any spikes but would I, How would I see the oscallation (sic) ? Would octane boost protect me in them circumstances ? (PS thanks for taking the time to answer this stuff)

Arran, Have got some pro boost so might try that first difficult to find stuff round here !

Mikee, Not busy just bored with playing catchup - hoping for 250bhp and a lot more torque ! :)

Kevin, Cheers m8 ,,, yours isn't bad for a bug eye ;)

Dave.

tend to agree with john here.

also I have learned the hard way, that it is worth any impreza owner buying an uprated fuel pump, whether modified or not.

this is always my first suggestion, and I notice it missing from your list of mods so thought it worth mentioning.

Adam

What pump would you recommend?

NINJA 06 September 2002 05:49 PM

try the walbro pump from mark a..seems most popular.fitted to mine it raised pressure

mikeesingh 06 September 2002 05:51 PM

best to email m@rk-a.com for a uprated fuel pump
he sells the walbro one, i think £130 including delivery

DemonDave 06 September 2002 07:20 PM

Does the P1 have an uprated pump, what make the p1 olive ok in a p1.

Just learning !

Dave

Bob Rawle 06 September 2002 11:11 PM

P1 restrictor is/should be 0.9mm, 0.8 was fitted to the type R and RA cars with the lower gearing to compensate for the reduced load impedance.

DemonDave 06 September 2002 11:37 PM

John,

sounds like it will have to come off then ..... is there anyway before I do of seeing how much it is spikeing ? Does the fact I am running a AE800 ecu help ?

Bob, I think you are right I might even have a 1.0mm coz there a lot of wrong orders to start off with and I think a remember 1.0 being mentioned but will need to check.

Dave.
