Wheres the best place to mount the KL inside the Scooby (MY99)

Vinesh 05 September 2002 06:10 PM

Also what are Det Cans?

mega_stream 05 September 2002 06:25 PM

Sounds like theres a whole bunch of people gonna be fitting these over the next few days :D

Det cans are headphones that a tuner wears to listen for det I think....probably wrong, usually am :D

P20SPD 05 September 2002 06:54 PM

No you are right mega stream, i witnessed Pat doing this on R19KET's car at Elvington, looked strange.:D

Vinesh 05 September 2002 08:01 PM

Any ideas of where to mount it?

P20SPD 05 September 2002 08:03 PM

Some put them down in front of the gear lever in front of the ash tray, have seen others on the dash near a pillar.

TAZMAN 05 September 2002 08:20 PM

even dumber question..whats a knocklink..oh I am about as mechanically minded as someone who is not mechanically minded at all....still know where the right peddle is!!

Type_RA 05 September 2002 08:32 PM

Knocklink detects dett and lighst when it occurs.

I have heard a good place is in the cup holder on the dash not tried though so I dont know how difficult it is.

P20SPD 05 September 2002 08:36 PM

That sounds tricky? Dont know yet where mine will go:)

johnfelstead 05 September 2002 09:19 PM

you want it in line of sight! No point having it if you cant see it! Best place for that is on top of the dash next to the A pillar. Lots are installed at the lower level dash, under the radio, but you cant see it light up during the day and it's not exactly brilliant at night either!

Dont mount it next to a lambda link either, as you want the lights to indicate a warning, where as the lambda link always has lights on, so you could mix the two up.

Nezz10 05 September 2002 10:15 PM

I put mine directly infront of me next to the windscreen. Just run the wires to the right under the bit of dah that pops up then down the hole at the bottom of the A pillar and underneath the steering wheel back to near the cigarete lighter where it joined onto the original wiring which BRD fitted.

Will post a pick if I remember tomorrow.

Neil.

I'm sorry guys. I'm no mechanic either, but this is the best KL installation I've seen.

The yellow line indicates where the wiring is laid and the red arrow is where there is a small hole under the plastic to feed the wires through.

The plastic bit that goes across the bottom of the windscreen is totally removeable but I just prised it up to feed the wires through.

It is a lot better then the standard posistion, a lot easier to read too!

The LED's in the knock link are high intensity ones where as the ones on the AFR are not so it is easy to tell them apart. The Knock link's bottom LED glows a dull green to indicate power then flashes really bright when it indicates knock. I usualy get one or two LED's flashing at me and if I am really gunning it then sometimes the first red LED will light but I have never had anymore than that show up.

hey Josh, u got any links or further info on that KL installation, as i have to admit, that is the dog's dinglies! :)

cheers m8!

Vinesh 06 September 2002 06:51 PM

Cheers Neil, great pic. :)

Scoobymania's knock sensor is a LOT more aesthetically pleasing IMHO, as it's a much smaller display unit that can go anywhere.

If you want to install like the pictures above, you need to disassemble your dash, disassemble the knocklink, solder onto the knocklink outputs and generally play about...

Rob D 19 September 2002 02:01 PM

Just thought I'd share my KL installation on a STi UK.
I made a external unit just for the LED's, makes it easier to install.

Edited to add sensor location.
The Knocklink sensor is 3" away from the cars own knock sensor.

Cheers,

Rob.

Rob, thats a bit of dingly too!!

By what I've seen here, you can really just take the output signals from the knocklink (really just the wiring to the bulbs on the original box, and then house them in whatever shape or form you would like. Am i correct i saying that????

(Please say yes, please say yes...!!!!)

Rob D 19 September 2002 02:31 PM

Raks,

Yes that's all there is to it.
I removed the LED's and rewired them in a smaller box.

Cheers,

Rob.

How much are knock links and where can I get one from??? :)

Steve_F 21 September 2002 05:43 PM

Hello gents,

picked up a Knocklink this afternoon & desperately need help with a couple of things!!

Firstly car is P1/STi V5

I'd like to position it in the corner by the A pillar, I lifted the strip by the screen & found a couple of holes to run cable thru', they just seem to go thru' behind the dash.

Question 1: How do I get the cable thru' the bulkhead to the engine compartment? I cant see any simple grommet or holes under the dash, how have you all done it please.

Question 2: Is there a spare position for the new sensor? I've seen the pics on the US website, can't make much sense of it when I look at my car!

I also believe I need to remove the intercooler. Anything I need to watch out for? I have not done this before!

Any and all advise would be much appreciated as I'd like to get this done this weekend!

Many thanks

Steve

Steve,

There are a few places you can get the wires through the bulkhead. Take a look at your Downpipe just behind it on the bulkhead is a rubber bung that is quite large. Note it's position to the steering rack and then get inside the car. Pull the black sound deadener back. Push a screw driver through the bung for the engine compartment and check inside the car. Oh and don't burn yourself on the downpipe. If you look around that area, you will see a few places that can be used.

Hope this helps, cheers Phill C

Rob D,

I like your KL, where did you get it from and how much was it ?

I mounted my AFM in the air went and it looks nice there. Easy to hid when you go to the dealers as well ;)

My mate was going to make me a little upside down bonnet scoop type casing, for fitting where that KL was put on the picture that Josh posted. I must chase him up on that ;)

Cheers Phill C

Rob D 23 September 2002 10:56 PM

Phil,

The box on the picture above was my own making! :)
I hid the actual KL box behind the stereo unit, no extra holes were drilled so easy to return back to standard if need to.

Cheers,

Rob.

babber 24 September 2002 09:09 AM

Rob,

So you bought a normal KL, and extented the wires added the LEDs in the box, so it like a remote display ? Still bloomin nice mate ;) Might consider doing that myself mate.

Cheers Phill C
