Check out www.SIDC.co.uk as in their FAQ there is full run down of all of the models and the differences.

My understanding is that up until the new shape bug eye models WRXs and STIs were japan import only, and both turbo'd. The UK equivelent without going into numerous special editions is the turbo 2000 AWD.

In the bug eye versions there is now a WRX and a STI type UK as well as a STI which is Japan only....confused!

Hope this helps

Yes, as Mark said. Until the new shape, the Impreza WRX was the non-uk name and without splitting hairs is called a Turbo in the UK. With the new shape, they renamed it to WRX.

The STI is a Subaru "modded" wrx and also comes in varing models...

One point to note, that Non-uk and uk Impreza's can be very different.

Hope this helps

Quickly...just to give you an idea

Old (classic ;)) shape scoobs....
UK Turbo 205 BHP
Jap WRX 240 BHP
Jap STi 280 BHP

There has been loads of variations but this forms the basis of the scoob models.
Hope it helps.

up to 1994 jap WRX had 240PS, in 1995 they got 260PS, and after that they got 280PS..:D

So whats the difference between a 97 STi3 and a 97 Jap wrx then?
R u saying they are both at 280 PS?

chrisp 03 September 2002 06:04 PM

Yep the later MYs are both rated at 280PS officially.

The difference are various though the STI had different pistons and blue printed engines, different suspension, brakes, interiors, intercooler (?) and spoilers. The rev limiters were also higher on the STIs 8000/8250 as apposed to 7500 . The STIs were rumoured to be slightly more than 280PS (around 300PS but that just rumour) as well.

I have a WRX Type RA (nonSTI) but it has loads of STI bits on it, turbo, suspension and wheels and part of the exhaust and some WRX bits on like a V4 spoiler.

Its very difficult to say what came with what as the specs seem to change from model to model in the same MY.

Not easy and what anyone says there always an exception somewhere ;).

UK classics were 208 bhp upto 1998 (phase 1 engines) and 215bhp after that (phase 2).

Well, atleast I've learned something today :D
Still gutted that my STi3 can be matched by some crappy WRX ;)

Regarding the latest bug eyes, the WRX STI 7 gains brembos, 260 somthing bhp from a blueprinted engine (I assume), front lsd, inverted struts, different wheels, lights and exhaust over the standard WRX.

Anything I've missed ?

The new age motor are a whole different ball game in comparison. The Japanese MY01 WRX is 250bhp not like our 215bhp and their STI7 is 280PS as apposed to out 265PS. Confused yet, it takes years :D.
