One thing I like about it is that you can change the chirps to quieter beeps/clicks after an alert this is really useful.

Can you do this with the Beltronics 550?

Also can you deactivate the frequency that is set off by petrol station automatic doors and mobile phones?

I'm going to upgrade in the next few days so any comments would be appreciated.

Yup - the Beltronics has a volume control and I'm almost certain you can select the frequencies. Had mine a couple of days and it's got every Gatso I've pointed it at http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

The newer ones give an earlier warning

Mine also has a frequency that is no longer used by police and its really anoying almost to the point you ignore it!

The Bel 550 has a volume control, 9 levels to choose from. You can also mute it, after a signal by pressing one button briefly. You can have a voice warn you of a type of frequency picked up by the detector or you can change it to a tone warning. It has 11 radar frequencies, all of which can be turned on or off seperately. The Good thing is it has a feature where you choose what country you are in and it turns on the frequencies needed for radar detection for that country automatically. There is the usual city motorway selection to help you not hear false alarms. It doesn't make the frequency weaker it still receives the signal fully but it doesn't sound until it gets to a stronger signal-strength threshold. It gives visual warning of the weaker strength threshold though.

Sorry to disagree Wrexy - but that not entirely true.

You set the detector to the country your in and it sets itself to pick up the type of frequencies used in your country. In the UK setting it STILL goes mad at automatic doors. I spoke to the guy who sold it who said that the doors happen to be at the same frequency as some of the police detectors/gatso's so you have to leave them on all the time.

Still - you get used to it going mad. Worth every penny in my opinion.

I did mention it "helps" you in not hearing false alarms. Maybe I was missunderstood the way I expressed it. Sorry people my fault. I agree it still gives false alarms, as no detector has the cabability of not giving false alarms as other things such as electric doors do work on the same frequencies as the radars. And they are frequencies that cannot be turned off otherwise you won't pick up the radar source. I also have a Uniden RD3 XL and that drives you mad with false alarms. The Bell 550 gives me, here in Greece 80% less false alarms than the Uniden. So far it only goes off at supermarket doors, and there are only 4 of those in my town. So if it goes off any where else I know there is a genuine radar trap. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

I find that the "false alarms" tend to be no where as LOUD as the actual thing - so its easy to pick up. If your near a shop door you shouldnt be speeding anyway - so it makes little difference. Luckily it switches off (power) at garages - which mostly have electric doors.

My mate has a beemer and it stays on level 9 all the time he fills up with petrol!!! His lighter socket stays on even without the keys in!!

Another reason to buy a scooby!!
