1. Why can't i erase ALL my temporary files? How do i know what's in the ones that it won't let me delete?

erm good question, tick the cookies box as well and try deleting the whole lot as the cookie may be incriminating as well (they are named like the site normally. If it won't erase through Internet exploiter, sorry explorer try browsing to the history folder on the pc (will either be in your own 'profile' folder if 2000/nt/xp or inside the internet explorer folder or windows folder depending how its been installed and manually delete the whole lot from there (make sure you dont have ie open as some files may be locked and not delete) - if you have any sites with save passwords like scoobynet for example you will loose these by deleting cookies etc. If it still doesnt want to delete all the history files, then boot the machine to dos (or go into dos mode) and kill the buggers there.

2. Can anyone un-erase the history file, if you know what i mean - does this process have "fingerprints"?

It can be recovered from a few tools (though i doubt most people would bother to look) or could be recovered from a backup if your history folder is in a location that is being backed up.

If that was four how did i answer 2.....................

TelBoy,

You might also want to look at HKEY_CURRENT_USER/ Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/TypedURLs...

and also disabling "Use Inline AutoComplete" under IE/Tools/Options/Advanced.

Search the microsoft support site for 'TweakUI'.

If your machine's connected to a corporate network, you're screwed - deleting the history won't change a damned thing. ;)

ptholt 02 September 2002 12:05 PM

mark o is correct of course, not only can they look at backups, but they can also check the server logs for traffic out through the internet to see where youve been.

several companies ive worked at in the past actually have a guy checking server logs every day sending out nasty emails if staff visit unwanted sites or surf to much. Needless to say the guys doings this had the best collection of bookmarks ive ever seen lol.

Bugga. Why do they make the Intertet so tempting to wander??

Good job it wasn't anything TOO bad then!!

Thanks for advice anyway...

You really need to delete/ clear index.dat as well - It also has a list of every site you've visited. You need a utility to do it though, Spider iirc does it or delete after booting to DOS (if not NTFS)

super_si 02 September 2002 01:00 PM

even i can do this :)

MarkO 02 September 2002 01:04 PM

I think it's already been pointed out that Tel's on a corporate network, so his dubious trawlings will have been recorded on the proxy server. Deleting cookies and cached stuff from the client PC is irrelevant.

Out of interest, Tel, care to share the URLs you were browsing so we can all have a go? ;) :D

TelBoy 02 September 2002 01:34 PM

Hehehe!

Well, for instance my daughter needs a bag for her tap shoes, so how come daddy wandered onto exoticdanceclothes.com ??!!!

Some stunning women in there i can tell you.... :D

super_si 02 September 2002 02:29 PM

lol thats a good one
