Ian,

I had a noise which might be the same problem which got worse and worse. It turned out to be a large stone lodged in the rear suspension. My dealer who removed it said this was not an uncommon problem.

My car is an STI V5.

I am getting a knocking from the rear of my car when coasting to a stop (it may be happening when I'm on the gas but unable to hear it).

The sound gets louder as I come to a stop as though I have some thing loose in the boot! If I stop quite sharp after a slow coasting speed the knock stops but if I release the brake to coast on a bit further the knocking sort of unlocks its self and starts again.

I thought of 3 things.

1. The exhaust. Which I checked and is not moving enough to hit the underside of the car, also if it was it couldn't make that louder sound.

2. The brakes, this is where I'm out of my depth, although Barretts had checked the rears on the basis that the hand brake and said they looked ok.

3. And finally wheel bearings and suspension things like that??

Any advice or help will be welcomed, its not effecting performance but is becoming a slight worry.

Lads I would really like some help on this one as I have a track day coming up and want to know just how serious this could be.

Its worth getting the prop shaft checked http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

Ian

This might seem silly...

Check the boot latch hasn't worked loose.
Check your tool kit is secure.

To be honest, I'm only suggesting these so you can rule them out, but I've had both causing knocking sounds in my car.

If it's a more serious problem (brakes?, wheel bearing?, cv joint?) I'd have it checked before going on track.

Good luck

Do you think the bushes are under alot more tolerance in motion than when I pulled the exhaust about to have a look if it knocking on the underside/bumper?

The black rubber bushes had become a little loose each side of the back box!!

may be I should replace these and go from there?

Ian,

does this noise only happen when you are stopping, i.e. braking?

If not, and the noise only happens at low speeds - i.e. under 10mph on rough roads or when parking, etc. Then it is probably your rear dampers that are shot OR the dampers are loose. Best bet is to take it to a local Subaru garage or reputable suspension specialist like PowerStation.

How serious is this? Well if it's just the dampers that have gone then you'll find rear end grip will be much lower and the possibilities of loosing the back end will be much greater. Alternatively, if it's suspension loose then who knows what could happen!

Don't wish to frighten you, but if it sounds like a suspension problem then definately get it checked out before a track day,

all the best,

Andy
