Just fitted a boost gauge to my 97 uk turbo, It's quite a hot day here today and I'm getting around 0.7-0.8 bar boost. I know the ECU reduces boost in high temps, but this still seems a bit low. Leaky dump valve maybe? It does make a bit of the 'blowing over a bottle' noise between 2000-3200 rpm. I'm running on Optimax BTW.

Get the car hot by driving it hard, then floor it in 5th gear at 4000 RPM. On standard boost control you do get less boost in lower gears, on hot days, and when you are not driving the car hard. I think the MY97 runs a little bit less boost than the 0.9ish bar of the MY99/00 so your car may not be that far out.

You could always go round all your hoses from turbo, through intercooler to throttle body and check for tightness and splits too.

A car lost 40 BHP and 40 lbft on the rollers the other day because of a hole in the intercooler. Another had a leak at the throttle body because it wasn't tightened up properly.
