Here's a question for you audiophiles and techno-geeks ...

If I want to record the audio soundtrack from a DVD, digitally to either Mini-Disc or CD via digital TOSlink - how can I achieve this?

I have tried this, but the MD deck doesn't recognise the input signal.

Anyone got any bright ideas ?

Thanks :)

I think I may have found a form of an answer on:
http://dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html

but I won't know til I go home and play!

Would still like to hear from anyone who has tried this.

MOST DVD players won't let you record audio through the TOS Link. This is a piracy issue. DAT (Digital Audio Tape)and MD came up with an idea called "SCMS" - Serial Copycode Management System. Desgined to insert a flag that tells the recorder that the source is a digital copy and not to record it again :(

This was designed as a consumer issue, but as DAT took off as a professional format, an SCMS stripper box was devised (plenty around, usually about £70).....

The same tyoe of thing is needed for a DVD (unless you've got it chipped etc)

Sorry mate :)

Look at the Behringer Ultramatch (cheap stripper - if there is such a thing!!!;) )

I didn't think it was an SCMS problem, more a signal compatibility problem.

I know it's possible to rip the audio tracks off the DVD using my PC, burn the WAV files to CD then record to MD...

...but I'm still convinced that it's possible to record direct from DVD -> MD

<<<I didn't think it was an SCMS problem, more a signal compatibility problem.>>>

If you were using proper TOS (8 track digital) then Yes, I'd agree... otherwise, the digital signal isn't 2track stereo, but already split into Pro-Logic/DTS. Doubt it though. SCMS, sorry. :)

Yes, that is the only way. There IS a flag in the data stream that will disable you from copying the data. It's built into ALL consumer digital equipment. End of story :)

You can - get a stripper. or just buy some professional equipment :)

But it isn't built into all consumer digital equipment, otherwise you wouldn't be able to record CDs digitally to MD ...

I was under the impression that SCMS was designed to prevent mass piracy, meaning that the second generation digital copy was tagged, and thus protected.

I bow to your superior knowledge, but will quest on ;)

SCMS is built into ALL consumer equipment. You're right in that the 1st copy is tagged - ALL digital recording equipment does have it. That is how it is tagged. i.e the DVD won't have SCMS, but the DVD disc will. when the MD tries to record the digital data, it will pick up the flag in the header data, therefore, no recording.......

No need to be sarcastic in your response - was only trying to give you the benefit of my 15 years of professional experience.... :(

However, best of luck.......

No sarcasm intended, sorry - I really did mean I was bowing to your superior knowledge!!
