I drove a UK '01WRX the other day & noticed that the lights/indicators where on the lefthand side where as my UK '96sport has them on the right side

Just wondered why, who has what where, could it be an import?

Brun 23 August 2002 09:06 AM

I thing all the scoobs with the early dash were "back to front" in effect. My m8's MY94 uk is anyway.

Jen 23 August 2002 09:08 AM

MY98 UK - lights and indicators on the left hand side :)

tony1979 23 August 2002 09:08 AM

Same as Jen

'back to front'??

I had a MY97 and the indicators were on the right, and it made sense! That way changing gear and indicator are being controlled by different hands!

The change happened when the interior was revamped at MY98 UK and on. I think the Japanese cars still have the indicators on the right.

I'm with Andy.
swap cogs and change direction at the same time.
Makes sense to me.

Blame the EU! :(

The sensible place for the indicator stalk is next to the door, whichever side the steering wheel is on, and it was always so until the European bureaucrats stuck their collective oars in, so French cars, German cars, American cars, etc, always had the indicator stalk on the left, whilst Japanese cars, Australian cars, etc, had the stalk on the right.

The EU decided, as they do  , that everything should conform to the same standard so any cars now sold in the EU, whether left or right hand drive, must have the indicator stalk on the left. Some manufacturers (e.g. Ford) saw this coming years ago and, whether for this reason or, more likely, economy of manufacture, have fitted their models with left hand stalks for years.

You can still buy a Japanese import with the indicator stalk on the RIGHT (right AND correct) side ;) :D

BTW, it's not to do with the indicators, but main-beam control for the headlights - so if you happen to be changing gear at night with main beam on, you can still dip the lights with the other hand.
Did the Eurocrats forget about RHD cars in the UK, or did they just want us to crash through being blinded by an oncoming car who couldn't dip his lights because he was changing gear? Maybe it was a punishment for driving on the left?

My MY95 UK has the indicators on the right. At first I found my self switching the wipers on everytime I wanted to indicate, but after a short time it felt so much better with them on the right. As mentioned already, it makes it much eaiser to change gear while at junctions etc. It is the RIGHT place for them ;)

H7 is dead right....

My STi has 'em left, my Fourtrak has ' em right!! Grrrrreat!;)

Mine are on the right too and it is much better. UK MY97 Sport.

Steve

Dream Weaver 23 August 2002 11:58 AM

My 94UK MR2 has the indicators on the right and I much prefer it - a lot more intuitive than "normal" UK cars.

Only problem comes when driving better halfs Clio - been to take it for its MOT today, and I kept indicating instead of putting the wipers on :D:D

The answer is that Scoobs are built to drive on the left.
Most of the cars in this country are designed to drive on the right and we were an after thought, they keep it cheep by not machining new parts just stuff them on the other side of the car.

Jolly Green Monster 2 23 August 2002 12:34 PM

They changed them in 98 as said already.. two mates had a MY97 and a MY98 and they were reversed etc..

Wifes car has the indicators the other side and I am for ever putting wipers on etc..

On the right is much better... you can then indicate and :

change gear,
smoke,
use the phone,
grope your bird,
pick your nose,
change the music on the stereo,
wave at another Scoobynetter,
etc..

Joking.. ;)

good point about the dipping of the lights though!

JGM :)

Esoteric Beast 23 August 2002 12:43 PM

MY94 Import has lights front and rear and an indicator in all four corners.............

IS THIS WRONG??????

Dream Weaver 23 August 2002 01:37 PM

good point about the dipping of the lights though!
Unless you're going round a sharp left or right ;)

InvisibleMan 23 August 2002 03:08 PM
