Ive toying with a slight idea, and think I can get an EJ25 engine cheap, if not free.. what sort of limitations are there with open deck blocks, is it gospel that they are better?

Has anybody ever distorted the cylinder bores?

Would you not get better incylinder cooling??

Hi mate ;)

dont really know much about the open deck blocks, but ive heard that the main issues are with high boost on trackdays, where the headgaskets have more chance of failing when using an open deck.

just thought id add that bit :D

The main concern is "bore walk" (common with carless Leeds folk :D when running high boost.

More likely to blow head gaskets, than distort the block. Cheaper option to semi/closing the block, would be wire ringing.

And what about crank and rods etc?? Are the std EJ25 any use for squeezing a little bit of power from??

Under the Bore Walk....... we'll be having some fun....:)
Sorry ! Continue

Lol @ mark... you just wait...

wire ringing the block wont stop bore walk though will it, surely it will just stop / reduce the chances of the head gasket going,

What sort of prices have people been charged for the following..

Semi Closing of the deck (properly.. Heat treated)
Wire Ringing
Reboring

David,

Don't know of anyone able to semi/close the deck in this country, yet.

Boring, circa £60~80.
Ringing, £80~100.

Mark.

hmm might just try closing it myself... ;)

I know a company that I have used to welding in the past, and as far as I am concerned they are the best welders around.

They weld aly, steel, titanium etc. They weld up aluminium pressure vessel for the company i used to work, which were about 10-11" diameter with a 8mm wall or so and required roundness to stay with 0.05mm.

They are not the most responsive people in the world, but if you send them some pictures and detailed requirements, I am sure they could do it, especially if they thought there was some repeat business.
