To all STi 7 Type UK Owners.

I swapped my front and rear tyres today and noticed that the underseal in the wheelarches was flaking away from the body in places revealing blue paint beneath.

Has anybody else experienced this and what do Subaru make of it?

It is of interest that one of the plus points of buying UK is that the vehicle is supposed to have better anti-corrosion protection.

Also the paint warranty is only valid if the anti-corrosion protection is intact. Any repairs have to be paid for!

It's not very good if it falls off after 4 months!

Comments please?

Funny you should say that.

Had a rear tyre blow out on the motorway 2 weeks ago, car had just done 10000 miles and had had its 10k service the weekend before.

Tyre goes, I pull over onto hard shoulder as quickly as I could from 3rd lane. Take wheel off to find that wheel arch underseal is down to the paint in two places.

Not good...

Coming to the conclusion that the under body protection is about as good as the paint they put on top.. :(

Bad luck guys - hope the dealers are receptive. After all, it's an integral part of the the product as sold, regardless of whether it's applied by IM or the factory. Sale of Goods Act etc....

Gotta say though, when mine arrived from the Belgian dealers, I gave it a good Waxoyl, despite the fact that I was assured by Alain Knockaert in Belgium that the 6 year corrosion warranty would withstand a British winter (with British salt, on our British roads....).

Yeh i agree. I noticed the monkeys from IM have put it all on very poorley, as well as all over the inside of the wheels, zorst etc.

Makes you wonder if enthusiasts are being taken fora ride by a company that So many of us are loyal to

For example high lost, lower Spec than Jdm, non existent PPP ;)

Well said Harry Boy!
A good going over with waxoil (£20)does the job, Easy to apply, easy to renew, clean, and good value for money IMHO

Where can you get the Waxoil??

railman 12 August 2002 07:26 AM

If it`s only 4 mths old and you bought the car from a uk dealer then take it back to the dealer, let them put it right.

Don't forget, the underseal is applied after the car gets to this country up at I.M's say no more! My sons STi had almost as much underseal oversprayed onto the inside of the wheels and on the struts as was in the wheelarches! Took ages to remove with white spirit.

You can get Waxoil from most car spare shops. It comes in many forms but the best one is in a 5 litre tin and a pump/spraygun for application.

Be careful not too pump too much pressure into it as my mate did and it exploded.

It took him an age to get it all off of him, his car bodywork, his neighbours car bodywork, a wall, a fence and a passing cat!

Well when your car goes for its 1yr service i suggest that you have the body service done too!
They reapply any underseal that needs it etc...

Hi all,

Thanks for comments. My point is that I think that Subaru should reproof the car under warranty rather than me paying at the 12 monthly service. I recall from the warranty book that the six year anti corrosion warranty is only valid if you do indeed have the body work service carried out each year(at your own expense?).

After reading this thread went and checked and noticed quite alarmingly large areas of the rear wheel arches had blue paint showing thru..... Doesn't look like it flaked off. I think they just missed and as someone else said thought it better to underseal the inside of the wheels !!!
