Call me dumb but,

Why are all WRC cars left hand drive?

Simon I know you know...

Because they spend more time on LHD road sections.....

spudgun 03 July 2001 09:02 PM

so they can adjust their nuts with their right http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

And how the hell do they get away with those tiny number plates?? I thought they had to be "Road Legal".

And surely a tiny back numberplate doesn't gain you much time on a stage http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif??

IIRC, the vast majority of road systems require driving on the right.

I also seem to recall that there may be a left versus right brain issue that dictates LHD as being phsycologically speaking advantageous. Remember these teams will do anything to win.

I suppose the FIA may, of course, dictate that LHD is mandatory, I don't know if this is the case.

Driving a LHD car on british roads isn't as troublesome as you may imagine... you probably end up being a safer driver as you have to be more sure of your overtakes.

The cars are road legal, but they are exempt from a few laws, as they have to carry rally plates during road sections of events. This allows them to bend some of the regulations that apply to us all.

Andy,

if you look at the British registered cars on the RAC Rally (or whatever we're supposed to call it these days), you'll see that amazingly the plates are legal size. I guess when the cars are abroad, the plates don't have to adhere to British (or perhaps any?!) Traffic Law.

As for LHD - I know that the Escort Cosworth/WRC was LHD because of routing of the Turbo, exhaust & stearing rack favoured this set-up.

Don't know about others though?

IIRC it is to do with weight distribution.

Thats what they say for the BTCC cars anyway http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/confused.gif

B****cks. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

The cars are left hand drive because most single seaters are/were (when manual shifts were standard).

Since then, it is a case of habit. Most serious race/rally drivers have become used to a right hand shift.
