Type RA Spec C also has a modified intake manifold and intake cam profiles for better air intake efficiency.
Yes, Type UK have front LSD
Type UK injectors are multi-hole type for better combustion rather than single hole like JDM
However I do not beleive these are sufficient reasons not to be able to build a very quick 1/4 mile car with a Type UK. Also more spare available when things go wrong!!!

I am interested to know the differences between the UK model of STI 7 and the Japanese version. Can anyone add/amend the list I have given below, which has been compiled from word of mouth:

# STI Type UK has a lower rev limit than STI Jap version. 7500 compared to 8000RPM. Internals different ?
# STI Jap version has slightly lower gear ratios in some gears.

Also, anyone know if the Jap version is sold in LHD in any countries ?

The reason I am asking: I have a friend in Iceland (Halldor Jonnson) who competes in 1/4 mile drags. He is looking to build a powerful new age STI early next year, and we are looking for the best base model for him to start with. We have to bear in mind that Iceland does not permit RHD cars to be imported, so if the Jap engine was found to be better spec and they don't do an LHD car version, we may have to transplant the engine. etc etc etc. However, if the engine internals are the same, I can just chip the ECU.

Cheers

Hi Stephen,
I think you mean a shift light, they can be set to 7500 rpm. My uk STI revs to 8000 or there abouts and as for the gearing I was led to believe they had the same drive train, gearbox, suspension, brakes and pretty much everthing.

The only differences I know of are :-

REAR WASH WIPE
AUTO SPRAY BUTTON ( for intercooler )( bottle for Jap is under bonnet as uk is in boot )
DIFFERENT ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM ( designed for Jap fuel 100 ron + )
NICE KENWOOD CD/MD NOT THE CRAP IM PUT IN THE UK VERSION.
PEAK POWER IS UP BY 11 BHP ( WOW big deal ! )I THINK FOR A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT EXHAUST SYSTEM ( not as many cats )? .

These are as far as I know but I'm sure there are other bits the Jap car has but probably only minor ?

If you mate buys a Jap spec make sure he gets the one with the front LSD, not all Jap STI's have it.

Hope this kind of helps

Arron.

Its the same car except for the points pointed out above :D

I seem to recall the the injectors are different from the Jap version as well. Probably to help emissions etc.

The first 3 gears are the same, but in the UK the last 3 are slightly taller, with 6th being almost the same overall gearing to 5th on the standard UK WRXs.

In Australia, they get the same lower gearing, but otherwise the same spec cars as the UK (apart from the alarm/tracker system).

An RA type C would be a much better bet. Its 130kg lighter iirc.

StephenDone 07 August 2002 12:38 PM

I'll confirm the rev limits the binary (definitive) way and let you know one way or another. ECU whilst based on same design has very different software UK/Jap. The Japanese version is much simpler - I think they've left out most of the emissions stuff.

I think the RA is only available in RHD, so he couldn't start with that car, sadly - would be best choice if not. I assume the engine is the same though ?

I have it on good authority that 1st-4th are same, only 5th/6th different. If so, shouldn't make any difference to drag racing times, since he won't get out of 4th by the end.

Looks like it's going to be a Euro Spec STI so far then.

So do Euro/UK STIs have the front LSD ?

Can anyone confirm or dispute this ? If true, may have a bearing on max power without bigger mods.

Thanks for all the info.

Thanks for that.

I assume Euro spec STI (LHD) is same as UK spec (RHD) - this is going to Iceland, and must be LHD to get into the country.

Steve,

The injectors on the UK car are multi-holed for better emmissions purposes. I don't know what the "rev limit" on the UK car is (from a limiter point of view) but the redline on the rev counter starts @ 7500 and not 8000 as in the JDM models.

Presumably, it should be possible to buy whatever car the WRC cars start out life as (Type C????) as they always seem to come in LHD.

Matt :)

There is a guy on I-Club (Alfriedesq) who purchased a JDM STi (happened to be a Spec C) and transplanted the drivetrain to his garden variety WRX. It has TGV spacers and IIRC no vapor recovery program in the ECU. He should be able to answer your questions by going out to his garage and looking at his car.

Hi guys,

Pardon my ignorance....what is IIRC ?

cheers,
Ray

It's UK STI to Jap STI differences I am after, as opposed to WRX to STI. Interesting to know about the TGV & vapour differences though.

If I Recall Correctly, IIRC :-)

Steve,

See if anyone on here with Rally experience (John Felstead/Simon De Banke) can tell you how you buy the basis of a Group N rally car, which should be LHD.....

Matt :)

Steve ,

The needles are orange as apposed to red for Jap ... sorry , but seriously I know of someone who put a Jap ECU in their type UK and it wouldn't fire up at all . I'm actually interested in a chip for my STI VII , have'nt seen availability on the web yet .

excuse ignorance but what is a TGV spacer?

Cheers Andy

StephenDone 10 August 2002 12:45 AM

Tumble Generator Valves.

They are in the intake manifold and cause turbulence in the air entering the engine. For emissions supposedly. If you watch them on DeltaDash, they only ever seem active when starting the car.

Ahh

I remember wondering what the sensor looking things were at the ends of the inlet manifold when I first saw the new WRX engine just after they came out.It all makes sense now :)
