Hi All

Every now and then when things get out of hand, we move a load of threads to their correct home.

The general forum is getting busier and busier all the time, and this could be relieved a bit if we were to move the threads to the appropriate forums.

In my mind it is a trade-off between the potentially felt insult of having your thread moved, and the disruption / lack of clarity for the rest of the community.

We have always been very lenient on this, but feel we might need to think about being a little more active in this area.

Go for it.
The general reason people give for posting here is that General is the most active. More rigorous moderating would ensure that ALL the forums are active so that excuse goes away.

If it doesn`t belong in general move it.
The forum titles are clear enough.

I agree, I only monitor most of the forums, but I always check general due to most threads being here.

I also know that if you want a fast response, you post in general (or muppet)

eg. speeding, politics etc

I agree with Chuckster. Starting threads in other sections currently means that you get less responses than in the General section, hence people have migrated here.

HI Simon,
I presume your thread has started after looking in GENERAL this morning.
It looks like a dumping ground for many non-GENERAL questions.
I dunno if it is laziness, noviceness? or coz no reply was gained in the proper section.

I am sure the Mods would like something to do so fire them off to where they belong.

People don't use the more specific forums for questions as most of the traffic is on general.

If you move posts to the "correct" forum more people will use the more specific forums and therefore less will post in general.

Then again I could be wrong....

General is where its at really - that said, each have their own favourite forum - but most come and look at General

Lets face it, if you want an answer answered fast then general is where you will get that answer.

I think threads should be moved to their proper place, but can understand members posting in 'general' first.

IDEALLY you would have someone move threads into the correct forums.

TECHNICALLY.. there should be little in general, as most of it can be attributed to one or other of the other Forums in the BBS.

The problem is, it's a FREE BBS, so it's not like you can employ people to constantly monitor content.

I have to raise my hands as being 'guilty' to the charge of posting questions in general when they should be in the appropriate forum. But I don't mind if they do get moved, one question about the move though. I assume it would be along the same lines as when a post is muppetised, in otherwords, it's locked on here but the header says 'moved to muppet forum' this would at least tell me where my thread had gone.

Personally, I think it's a good idea to moderate a bit more strictly, will keep the signal to noise ratio down a teensy bit.

I know that i, and others, do use the 'no one reads section X, so I posted it in general' comment, but if it gets moved to the right place, then anyone trying to reply to it, or see the updates will have to go to the correct section, so not really a problem.

As for people getting in a tis because it's been moved from general, well, it should not have been there in the first place.

Of course the upside might mean that a few new sections might appear, but I doubt that'll be needed.

Moving is a great idea, but I think it may still leave general a bit clogged if we "close and transfer" as the topics will still be in the list.

If we chose to "transfer and delete" then there'll be a raft of posts titled, "where's my topic"...

I don't see how we can win this one other than trying to hint that people are in the wrong place?

chiark's right, it's a catch 22 situation. But a no replyable message by simon, certainly on general, if not on all sections, stating something like:

<I>please post in relevant section, failure to adhere to this will result to your thread being moved to the appropriate section. It will still be listed in this section but to reply, or view updates to it you will need to view it in the section where it has been moved to.</I>

Would be great if it was moderated more, but I can understand that this takes time and people will want to know where there post is. I would love to get an automatic mail sent to me every time one of my posts was moved, something along the lines of the mail letting you know someone has replied would be good.

What we're trying to decide (and looks like we've decided) is whether we want to change the way it's done.

I think the constant locked threads will start to take effect and will gradually encourage everyone to post in the correct forum.

I just don't want to appear to be locking threads for the sake of it, etc.

as long as we know, and educate others as to why the threads are being locked then I don't see a problem.

OK, so there will be a week or so initially of people posting 'why is my thread closed' 'where has it gone?' etc... and when new people come on a few will crop up, but i think it'll be worth it.

Simon could use the 'webmaster' account to put a 'See this if your thread has been locked' message in General (and send it to the top every day), or even better in the info bit that used to appear under the Scoobynet logo whenever important announcements were made.

Is it possible to automatically generate an email to the bbs record of the email address of the originator to say that their thread has been moved by the moderators?

I know perhaps it will be more work for you guys, but I belive it would pay of in the end. As we all know, we post in general coz nobody looks in the right forum.

How about labelling the general forum as "Topics without a forum" or similar, even if only in the short term to remind everyone as they are about to post.

Its a slow cycle but the more people have moved towards posting in General the reason to look in the other forums has become smaller as there is less to wade through.

If everyone knows that you are going to tighten up the rules they should have no reason to complain. I'm sure once someone has had had a post moved, they will be more careful next time.

Another thought. When you move a topic, why keep what has been posted so far in the froum in which it was posted? Perhaps make it a link to the forum it's been moved to? That may help people get used to the idea of going to the correct forum in the first place.
