Two options...

1) Forward the mail to abuse@ your ISP's domain. Chances are it will be forged headers and not traceable. Abuse teams are usually very busy as well.

2) http://www.met.police.uk/computercrime/index.htm is a specific team for Computer related crime including porn. Might be out of their 'area' geographically but a good place to start.

{Chelle you muppet, it's Computer Related}

Okay, my apologies. I'll try a different line next time and see if I don't get more laughs. ;)

I am totally disgusted! And would never ask for anything like this! Where can I report it to?

Little Miss WRX 05 August 2002 05:38 PM

I think the police are your best bet!!!!

RichS 05 August 2002 05:39 PM

$hit that's awful

Sorry - no idea where you would begin complaining... maybe your ISP could help / direct you...

Bad enough to get sex related spam via e-mail, but child related? Unbelieveable!

RichS 05 August 2002 05:40 PM

Of course Chelle is right... ignore me - the police is a much better option..

ChrisB 05 August 2002 05:41 PM

Whatever you do, DONT go to their site and try to unsubscribe.

You'll just get more of this filth.

Little Miss WRX 05 August 2002 05:41 PM

Clare I am moving it to non-scooby related, I feel it a bit more appropriate, I am sure the muppets will have plenty of sensible answers, but there will be more people looking in non-scooby.

I hope you get this sorted!

Mihcelle :)

Amen Corner 05 August 2002 05:47 PM

Police. Definitely.

That's about as sick as it gets.

AllWheelDrift [iDub] 05 August 2002 05:49 PM

Ewwww!

I like to believe those things are hoaxes/lies. I'm guessing it's fake, because it's very illegal and including the street address doesn't make sense. Someone is trying to cause problems.

If you go to the website, it pops up the following message:

Important information

We have recently been a victim of a nasty spam attack.
Claiming that this site has child porn.
We Do not promote or tolerate child porn in anyway.
The person sending out this nasty
and untrue email is under investigation by the authorities.
We suggest if you have received a nasty email, claiming child porn on this site,
just delete it and ignore it.

thankyou

I'm sick of gettin crappy email.... see my post in the hutch

mark_h 05 August 2002 05:50 PM

Or the FBI, since it's a US address

MarkO 05 August 2002 05:51 PM

As I already said in the identical thread in the computer section, this sort of spam is extremely prevelant, and should just be binned.

I get about 30-50 pieces of cr*p like this every day - it's the price to pay for having a fairly widespread 'net presence'. :(

Clarebabes 05 August 2002 05:57 PM

I had a spate of spam mail a while ago, but nothing as bad as this - just subscribing me to newsgroups and stuff like that.

This is not nice. Yes, it is probably a wind-up of sorts, but what sort of sick pervert would want to see "a 4 year old get snuffed out"!?

Vile, sick, disgusting, perverts!

Little Miss WRX 05 August 2002 05:59 PM

Chris,

I moved it here as there was already one in computer related and it was too serious an issue for the muppet forum.

wheelwright 05 August 2002 05:59 PM

Oh, and it's a con anyway - I signed up on the site with my c/card details and the stuff on there's not even half as good as they claim it is.
You find this funny ???

Luke 05 August 2002 06:03 PM

MarkO

I think you need to edit your reply

MarkO 05 August 2002 06:04 PM

You find this funny ???
Actually, yes. Bloody funny, in fact.

Spam isn't new, and mails like this have been kicking around for years. Sure, if the site was serious and really contained that sort of stuff, it would be horrendous. But the fact that the disclaimer is up on the website mentioned implies that it's been around for a while.

Anyone who's on this board should be net-savvy enough to know that there are something like 5 billion junk emails sent per day, almost all of which are simply tools to try and get page impressions on ad-sponsored sites. Nothing more, nothing less. The only other reason for spam of this tasteless type would be to attempt to discredit the site it links to.

Either way, getting all worked up about it does nothing other than exacerbate the shock-value effect of the mail.

Frankly, I'm surprised that Clare didn't just bin the mail in the first place. If real paedos were dumb enough to send out mails of this sort for real, they'd have been locked up years ago. IMO, it ranks up there with the Nigerian scam in terms of likelihood of reality...

And, as the saying goes, you have to laugh, otherwise you'd spend the whole of your life depressed.

Clarebabes 05 August 2002 06:08 PM

OK, looking at it now, it seems silly of me to overreact. But I have a daughter and I don't find it funny - whether it be serious or a joke!

I wouldn't want to see anyone get snuffed out, let alone a child.

I suppose we'd better calm down now.

Luke 05 August 2002 06:08 PM

MarkO

I suppose your correct about what you mean...
But the way you put it... is asking for trouble.

A fair point gone wrong??

MarkO 05 August 2002 06:10 PM

It was a joke, for christ's sake, to lighten up a fairly depressing thread. If people can't see that immediately, then I suggest they lighten up. :D

wheelwright 05 August 2002 06:15 PM

surely a time and a place for everything??

MarkO 05 August 2002 06:16 PM

Yep, and IMO that was the perfect time, and the perfect place. :D

BOB.T 05 August 2002 06:17 PM

I saw the joke, just didn't think it was funny:(

Little Miss WRX 05 August 2002 06:21 PM

MArk,

In all honesty, 99.9% of the time I like your humour, the wind ups and the flaming. I sit and smirk as I watch you intricately spin a web to trap people in or just plain humiliate them ;)

The subject of child abuse/pornography and such are too sensitive a subject to make crass remarks about in mine and other people's opinion.

I saw the humour, but in all honesty it wasn't the right place to do it.

Complaints have been received about it and people are posting as such that they do not like it.

I think it best that you do edit your post.

Michelle.

Clarebabes 05 August 2002 06:22 PM

Ok, calm it down. I never meant to start a row!

MarkO 05 August 2002 06:24 PM

Well, I'll tell you what. Since we've established that the spam is a hoax, and we've posted the info about the various agencies Clare can contact, and there's also another thread (duplicated, but where it should be) in the computer-related forum, how's about you just lock this one and we'll let it drop out of sight. If people really

a) think I've signed up to the site (for which the URL hasn't actually been posted in this thread) or

b) didn't find the comment amusing

then it won't be any great shakes.

:D

wheelwright 05 August 2002 06:24 PM

you didnt clare.

MarkO 05 August 2002 06:25 PM

I did. :D ;) :p

Chris 05 August 2002 06:26 PM

FFS!!! Get a grip!

If you don't like this sort of thing, disconnect from the internet, unplug your computer, and hide under the bedclothes!

The real (internet) world is far too rough for sensitive types like yourselves.

You don't have to *read* and *digest* every mail you get. Everymorning, I do a multiselect of about 15 mails and plain delete it. read the subject line and if it loos like spam, it probably is.
