Driving around to the north of heathrow just now and came to a roundabout. Stopped to see if anyone had priority and somthing caught my eye looked round and caught a laser beam right in my left eye. [img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img]
Looked again with my one remaining eye and saw it came from behind a fence which contained the offices of "a major pharmasutcle manufacturing comapany". It was a few minutes before I could see again in my left eye.[img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img]
Went round to the front entrance and buzzed security. I told them what had happened and was told that nobody there had a laser. Quite an assumption to make from behind a desk when the offices are set in acres of ground. Told them I would be writing a letter to find out who was responsible and got a "whatever" back. Anyone know what I can do about this? I know it was behind the fence and in the grounds as I saw the laser flash as it passed behind one of the bars of the fence. I am REALLY hacked off that they could do somthing that dangerous. I was on the road FFS. [img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img]
Should I involve the police? or should I write a vitriolic letter?
One thing is for sure I am not going to let these cnuts get away with it if I can help it.

It may have been kids in the grounds having sneaked in? You sure it was a member of their staff?

If kids these days can get over a 7 foot high vertical barred fence in the wet without being seen by the tons of floodlight assisted cameras they've kitted the place out in then they should plan a career in escapology.

BuRR I think the security guy wouls have been quite pre-occupied if they had intruders. Pharmacutical companies and related organisations tend to be security conscience.

Astraboy, I would go to an optician even low grade lasers can cause lasting damage.

I would also write a letter to the company and explain what happened and any findings from the eye exam. Try finding someone in the PR department rather than security (Public Relations are more likely to be permenant members of staff).

Becareful of the revenge list, I have bet a few of one pharmacutical company's "inernal facilities department" and I wouldn't want to mess with them. (I wasn't in trouble BTW)

We have a large company like that on our division..... as I say, I'm speaking from experience.

Where can I get these high powered lazer pointers?

i have one. got it when i was on holiday in aiya napa last year for about a fiver.

don't have a clue where u can get them over here.

Computer Fairs sell them for about £2. I used to play with them at school until someone brought one in and shone it in the teachers eye. The kid almost got suspended and the teacher (physics) went straight to the opticians for a retina scan. I think he was over reacting tho.

Most of these lasers are not harmful but some of these 'grey imports' are not approved for UK sale/use. >1Mw is approved.

I suggest you have a check up at the opticians.

Your experience puzzles me. But if you intend to take the matter further get an eye test now!

Then contact the company again. If it was kids then there should be video footage. As it happened on a Saturday the facility would be mostly empty and security should have capped the kids on video, if not they should be fired. If this was pharma company premises that the beam came from then they really are tight on security.

I would discount any possibility that the beam was from laboratory equipment or the like. I have a Ph.D. in pharmaceutics and have worked with most of the common and not so common equipment. There are three very good reasons why you should not have been zapped by a laboratory laser.

1. They are all specifically designed not to zap people primarily for operator safety;
2. Many lab laser beams operate in the IR so you can’t see them;
3. The laser is always pointed at something and not out the window. Usually, the receptor that measures whatever the gismo measures;
4. You don’t play with these instruments outside, and bench level is usually lower than window level – so again they can’t get you.

OK that’s four reasons. This really only leaves laser pointers as the culprit. If there was a presentation going on (on a Saturday?) then there is about a 1:1000000 chance of a random flash in your direction by a careless presenter but with your distance from the source the beam would flash across so quick you would not see it. Also most presentation suites in modern facilities don’t have windows (it’s easier to dim the room) so again no risk.

So it was kids…. Or maybe a police laser trap. Unless of course the janitor did it…. (Scoobydoo ending)

If you do take it further I’d be really interested to know if you get to the bottom of it.

Onto more serious matters, it was a laser pointer. I could see by the way it moved that it was a hand held job. I will be taking it further but I will need to write a proper letter and decide who to address it to. I'm leaning toward the MD, but I could also go the PR way, not sure about security as they might close ranks if it was one of them responsible.
Either way, I'll let you know how I do.

P.S. I also know it was being purposly pointed at my eyes, or at least my face. The beam swept up my face, then down again and then went into my left eye, then it all went fuzzy for a bit. and painful.
