That defeats the whole object of using it! I leave my downloads for a week or so before wiping 'em!

FFS, read my earlier post. I'd love to share my files, but it's hardly realistic when my only computer is a laptop, and my only web connection is a 56k dial-up, is it?

And, conversely, with my connection speed I'm not exactly 'rinsing' their bandwidth, am I?

Didn't buy it, Bob. Downloaded it from the net. Let's push things forward's a good tune!

Clarebabes 04 August 2002 03:20 PM

Where and how do you download a complete album?

fatherpierre 04 August 2002 04:46 PM

From Kazaa. www.kazaa.com download the two programmes on the menu screen (takes about 30 mins in total) then it self explanitary from there. I don't tend to buy Cds any more cos of that site! Yes, I'm tight!

I think it's a load of crap and should be discouraged really, each to their own though:D:D

fatherpierre 05 August 2002 12:01 AM

Brendan Hughes 05 August 2002 12:03 PM

My son desperately wants me to log on to kazaa in order to grab a load of free music.

Suspicious of a gift horse as a free lunch, I did a search on kazaa, and on p.1 of Google found this article: http://www.hpl.hp.com/shl/papers/kaz...aUsability.pdf

It doesn't give a date, but refers to the latest version of kazaa, so must be quite recent.

Basically, it says that, by joining, you allow some of your stuff to be downloaded, and it's not easy to define which is downloadable and which is private: many people think they've blocked stuff off but it is actually accessible to the world, and there are some unscrupulous persons taking advantage of this.

Hope this helps

BJH

You're only allowing access to one file called 'my shared folder'. All you do is download the songs and then transfer them to a seperate file. All you can't move from there is the kazaa user programme which is only acessible when you're conected. You only connect when you choose to - not automatically when you log onto the net.

MarkO 05 August 2002 06:28 PM

Just go to the options page and check the "don't share my files" option.

Bear in mind that if you're not sharing anything, some users will cancel your downloads though.

MarkO 05 August 2002 06:38 PM

I only have a 56k connection (well, on the laptop I use Kazaa for, anyway). I'd love to share my stuff, but it'd be useless for anyone else to use. If I had a constant connection with a bit more bandwidth, it'd be a different story.

fatherpierre 05 August 2002 06:44 PM

True. Plus, it renders your computer useless when downloading as it sloooooooooooooows it down so much for internet use.

MarkO 05 August 2002 06:47 PM

Eh? Are you talking about uploading (i.e., somebody else uploading your files) or downloading?

If you're downloading from kazaa, then apart from slowing your web access, it shouldn't affect the computer. If somebody else is downloading from your PC, it will affect it even less, since most of the data transfer when surfing is to your PC, not from it.

fatherpierre 05 August 2002 06:48 PM

Downloading and web speed!

MarkO 05 August 2002 06:52 PM

Ah. I was talking about uploading (i.e., sharing your files for other people to download from your machine, which I disable). :D

jbryant 05 August 2002 08:54 PM

You disable people from taking your files whilst simultaneously leeching theirs?
Nice.
