Reversing over the wife is bad for the heart

London - An elderly British driver ran over his wife twice in his Skoda car and promptly had a heart attack, the Sun newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The couple, both aged 84, are recovering in the same hospital in Durham in the north of England.

Alex Ranson felt a bump as he reversed into his garage, but thought he had hit a rock. He then edged his Skoda Felicia forward a few yards and reversed again, unwittingly driving over his wife a second time. His wife Olive suffered a broken leg.

A Durham police spokesperson told the tabloid that passers-by had alerted Ranson to his error, and an air ambulance had been called.

"After he realised what he'd done Mr Ranson went into shock and suffered a heart attack. He was then also taken to hospital," the spokesperson said.

Paramedic Bill Spence, who took Olive Ranson to hospital, said: "It was only after landing that we were told the gentlemen had suffered a suspected heart attack and was being taken by road to the same hospital." - Sapa-DPA
