Just back from a fortnight in the baking hot sun of Lanzarote and need an update on whats been happening. Any news from the community, any happenings, POC bought a new car yet etc etc :D:D Anyway, good to be back on Scoobynet and will spend the next few hours doing catch up. :) DW Avi - have you added a spoiler to your Sport and a private plate which reads like Andy A? When we arrived it was cold with dark clouds, then started raining on the transfer. To say we were gutted was a big understatement. :( However, on the 2nd day it all cleared up and has been very hot for the past fortnight. It was 37C yesterday. It is really good weather wise as it is hot, but has a constant cool breeze/wind blowing so it helps a lot. Which resort are you staying in? DW |

Have gone for one of these package things...find out when you get there jobs. All we know is that we get free transfers and a 4* hotel so should be OK... Never been b4 so dunno what top expect, it was a spur of the moment decision! I think July/Aug is the hottest time out there... Is there anywhere you suggest we go when we get out there? If you are in a 4 star hotel, you will probably be in Costa Teguise, or Playa Blanca. Nice resorts in themselves. You may well be in Puerto Del Carmen though, in the San Antonio (nice hotel).
We were based in Puerto Del Carmen which is the largest resort, and is about 4 miles long. My main advice would be: 1. Hire a car and visit some of the islands attractions such as Timinfaya Park, Cueva de Los Verdes, El Golfo, and Jameos del Agua as well as the Teguise market on Sundays. Nice places to go, and only £4 to get in for main attractions - market/el golfo is free. Petrol is cheap at about 40p a litre. Hire the car once there, and the cost is about 15 - 20 Euros a day (£10-£13). Roads are quiet, great to drive, and the surfaces are like new (especially compared to UK). 2. Puerto Del Carmen (PDC) is full of shops, restaurants, bars etc and has great beaches, however the bars and nightlife are a bit strange. There are hundreds of cafes/bars/clubs, but there are no bar crawls, and not many bars with loads of people stood up etc. Everyone tends to sit at tables, and the resorts are very much family/couple orientated. Talking of bars, drinks are VERY expensive compared to other holiday resorts. Expect to pay £4 a pint for Caffreys, £3.50 for G&T, Bacardi and Coke etc, £3 bottle of bud (and even £3.50 for a can of red bull!!!!) Local lager is £2 a pint, and decent enough to drink. However, food is cheap. Lots of restaurants in PDC, Playa Blanca, and a few in Costa Teguise. For about £20-25, you will get wine, 2 starters, 2 main and desserts. Food is really good as well. At the far end (West) of PDC is the old town, with good seafood restaurants, and a modern shopping centre with about 20 stores in it. 3. Shops - there are hundreds of electrical shops all over the place, offering everything from Radar detectors and video cameras, through to watches, perfume, Gameboys etc. Be VERY wary of them. At first you will not believe it. I was offered a Gameboy Advance first night for 35 euros (£20), and a digital camera for 100 Euros (£66). On investigation, you can only have the GBA for 35E if you buy a demo game pack - total cost 105E. Same with video cameras - they make you buy all the accessories. Prices are still cheaper than UK, but only minus VAT etc. 4. Beaches are great and we spent time on both PDC and Costa Teguise beaches. Sun loungers are £4 a day for 2, beaches are clean, and sea is clean, nice and warm. Lots of windsurfing in Costa Teguise, and good waves. Avoid the chaps selling drinks and ice creams on the beach. They buy a can of coke from the shops on the beach for 50cents, then sell them on for 2 euros :rolleyes: To give you a summary, try the following if you are stopping in PDC: * Best English breakfast - Top Gun cafe - £2 * Cheap drinks - Travellers Inn, 7pm-11pm - 2 spirits/mixer - £3 * Best meals/food - Lani's Melon, Lani's Grill, Le Dolce Vita * Best Surf shop - El Nino (jewellery, clothes etc) * Best beach - Playa Grande, PDC * Best bar - Bodhran Irish Bar - brilliant live music with accoustic guitar stuff. * Best/Reliable electronics - Visante * Cheapest Ciggies/booze - Bazar Sainith Costs Teguise bay is very nice for the beach, and Playa Blanca for the harbour. There is only one Scoob that I saw in PDC. A blue Impreza GT - I think that is the Euro version, but it didn't realy sound like a scoob :confused: Looked good though - lowered with gold wheels. Thats another thing about Lanzarote - they love their modified cars. Nearly EVERY car has alloys, performance exhaust etc etc, even the bog standard Saxos and Twingos. There are some lairy cars out there as well, including a wide bodied 206, and lots of modified Hyundais with big spoilers etc. :) DW |
One of the shops in PDC sells Subaru Harness Pads for about £5 - they look pretty good as well. :)
Another thing - stock up on Suncream from Asda before you go - it is more expensive once there. And, in the resturants, they bring you bread before you order which you assume is free, then they charge you £1.50 for it. It is nice bread though so worth the money, but it is a surpirse when they first do it - not all of them do this though. |

I went there at Xmas and I wished I'd had your guide before I went! The bits I'd like to add is watch out at the electrical stores for the high pressure selling, if you want to look at the goods (meaning it's removed from the packaging) then they expect you to buy it...... There is also one village in the North of the Island (I'll remeber the name later) that is notorious for a quaint local custom of breaking into your hire car to steal valuables. All the others are as good as gold though. There is a better beach than DW's as well (I'll remember that one as well sometime). Oh and nearly forgot, they were doing a hire car deal at the airport, I didn't take it up as I thought they would catch tired travellers with high cost vehicles, turns out that the deal was the best that I found on the Island! Just make sure you hand it back to the hire company DIRECT and not to a 'representative' who promptly dissappears with it. F |
Floyds right - there are lots of beaches all over. Not much of a beach man me though - dont like the sand in me toes :D:D:D

Another point - you can drive the whole island in a day if you want, as it is only 60km long, and 20km at its widest point :D:D

i've been back coming up for two weeks now... funny you should mention the blue scooby with gold wheels... i saw that and that got me thinking about maybe getting one !!! the blokey just drove up and down the strip all day it would seem...oh yes and playing eminem... did you see the really really wideboy 206 in a kinda peach sort of colour..it did kinda look the b******s.... must have spent as much as the car cost in modding it.... lanzarotte is good though....food is good and cheap... oh and go to Caesars nightclub.....it's improved since last year :) |

The 206 was awesome. A bit cheesey, but obviously a professional job. I kept trying to get a pic of it, but it was up for sale, and he must have sold it as it went towards the start of last week :( There was also a great looking Hyundai Coupe in red as well. DW |

the 206 'cause of the amount of work done.. the hyundai / evo because of the sheer amount of cheesyness involved oh and if you want a good chinese then the "Grand Shanghai" was really good..went there last year a couple of times as well.... it's red and it's above a bank i believe...really good food.... but get some pics of the car (s)!!!!! |

seriously though.....the one that runs along the main front is ok but a bit crowded but there are some little areas under the palm trees with low stone "walls" around them.... they looked quite cool but i think you needed to get there early in the morning to nab them.... |
Den - if you're going to Lanzerote, there's one thing you HAVE to do - just off the beach front in Puerta del Carmen there's a shopping precinct - place that does quadbike rallys across the island. Decent bikes (250cc manual gearbox) and great fun. Up and around one volcano and across to the sea on the other side of the island - mostly sand tracks with some great cambers! If you've got a confident group the guys really let you go for it.
There are loads of flyers around in the hotels, so check it out. Best part of the holiday.. |

One last thing - not sure whether it will bother you or not, but the resort is full of Germans and Scandinavians. We hardly saw any English folk whilst there, and the resort is geared towards German/Scandi's, hence menu boards etc show german first, then English.
I saw the quad bikes riding through town each evening - they did look really good fun, but I have had a few scary ones on quad bikes so gave it a miss :) DW |
