Don't like the engine much...

That boost curve looks shocking - what can I do to lift the high RPM boost? And keep some control over boost in the ECU's hands...

Fit a dawes device or similar...
Fit and EBC...

They both take control away from the ECU.

How can I adjust the high RPM boost target?

Razor2001 22 July 2002 02:23 PM

Hi guys and gals,

I would have to say that I agree with article. Below 4,000 rpms is a joke. (I have a DM STi-7). Hopefully my soon to be installed full turbo back ScoobySport decat will solve this problem and give me a torque curve I can drive around in traffic with :) We will have to see !

Cheers,
Ray

I wonder which gear that boost graph was recorded. It certainly doesn't look accurate to me.

Surely you can get a VF30 to come in earlier than this?

I logged an STi 7 decat with a Dawes the other day- will dig out the log and post a boost curve in 3rd gear for comparison, but it will be tomorrow sorry.

scrappydoo 22 July 2002 06:42 PM

OK, ive been studying these posts with interest over the last few months because ive been considering buying an STI. The only thing that is putting me off is this 4000RPM thing and the snappy end in the wet. Is it really that slow, like the article states? I thought the lag on the WRX was bad at 2500RPM but 4000 is taking the P*$$. I know the PPP will sort it out but i really dont want to spend 2K on something that should be there to begin with. How do you owners of the STI feel about its overall performance compared to that of the MY01 WRX?

Scrappy

stevejohnson511 22 July 2002 06:52 PM

I have changed from a 01wrx to sti7 and i am well pleased with it.
Its quicker off boost than a WRX and I would bet my life savings
on taking a mitsubishi colt at the lights(if i had any after buying the sti).
Steve.

scrappydoo 22 July 2002 07:02 PM

Well thats a bit of reassurance.Cheers mate. Maybe i will get one then. :-)

Im was off to subaru this week to place an order but wasnt too sure whether i should based on the clunking noises, performance etc etc experienced by some owners.

Steve, Do you get the noise at the rear of your STI?

stevejohnson511 22 July 2002 07:25 PM

I keep listening for the dreaded rear clunking noise but so far
I've heard nothing.
Steve.

I also made the jump from a WRX to the STi. The STi is a lot better car and a lot faster. But there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that it is very, very laggy. I've bogged down a few times now in first gear, but as is normal I'm getting better at it the more I get used to the car.

Maybe they designed it that way to encourage people to buy the Prodrive performance pack?

GDBSTi 22 July 2002 08:00 PM

Read article this morning.

Below 4000rpm criticism is correct if cats are cold. However not so bad when they are nice and warm. Also if standing at lights use your right hand usefully and press that intercooler water spray button. That way you will also get off quicker.
I have launched my Standard GDBSTi from a standstill many times to be quicker than old M3 and new M3 in 1st 2nd and 3rd. Does take practise, but after a while it is a regular party trick. Dial in 5500rpm, as revs approach 5500rpm let clutch out till it starts to catch, hold there till revs bounce back from 5000rpm till 5500rpm then let go and you are flying. 13,4 sec 400 metres this way.
Top end boost drop is more of a problem since one ends up having to change gears in corners (see handling problem thread) or at the end of a straight on the track to keep in the torque curve. Not good for track use and hillclimbs!!! However the PPP exhaust and ECU should hopefully address this problem, otherwise EBC and free-flow exhaust.

BRR 22 July 2002 10:02 PM

No need for an EBC. Full decat works well with just a restrictor change.

A distinctive improvement not just under 4000rpm but also at the top end.

Don't forget that Australia get the same detuned model that you guys get in the UK! - I'd be interested to compare the boost curve on a JDM model?

BruceWarne 23 July 2002 05:45 AM

Ever wondered what autospeed sells in their shop?

I don't take comments/tests from aftermarket part suppliers too seriously, for obvious reasons.

Below 4,000rpm the car is a dog. But above that it's a monster. Changing up a bit earlier (6500 rpm) should overcome the boost drop-off problem.

mutant_matt 23 July 2002 09:13 PM

I've driven a loosened up, PPP'd, full decat WRX 01 back to back with a 200 mile old STi Type UK and I have to say, I thought the STi felt quicker.

I would say that yes, there is a fair bit of lag but the 6 speed box really helps and I don't find it difficult keeping it spinning above 4000. From the torque curves I have seen from the Dyno, I would say the even spread and lack of tail off at the top end is far more suited to fast driving than the old MY00 I had before which tailed off much more.

I'd also say that it's quite torquey off boost, not in a "fast grunt out of corners" way, but in a "I'll happily pull up this hill in a high gear, low rpm, low speed" scenario......

All in all, the off boost behavior doesn't really bother me, and I have always favoured drivability over top end power/high bhp figures.

Matt :)

mutant_matt 24 July 2002 08:12 AM

Chaps,

Had another look at that RPM vs Boost graph. I believe it's taken from 1st gear and is not at all representative of the car. 1st gear is very low and is over so quickly, the boost doesn't really have time to build properly. Everybody knows that "real" boost measurement should take place in 4th, 5th and 6th where the load is highest and the boost held for longest. For example, here is a DeltaDash trace from a 4000 mile old standard Type UK STi in 1st:

http://upload.turbosport.co.uk/getpi...5029676311.jpg

Unfortunately I haven't got a comparible trace for higher gears yet but I do have a standing start drag to the top end of 5th which the 1st gear trace was taken from:

http://upload.turbosport.co.uk/getpi...5029344184.jpg

Like was said, perhaps Autospeed are not totally un-biased....;);)

Matt :)

mutant_matt 24 July 2002 08:16 AM

...and that spike at the end of 5th was the driver lifting off due to the warp speed we were catching a car in front ;);) and then overtook.....:D:D

Matt :)
