Never really a problem when I lived in Merc-Benz land, but I need some Scooby bit's and short of going to Demon Tweeks, I am struggling to find anyone who accepts AMEX.

I know that their charges are higher for the merchant than Visa, but this can be passed on to the customer, so why does no one I have spoken to take it?

We have a good community type thing going here on the BBS & SIDC and I would much rather spend my money with people who have a passion for Scoobies and who frequent the BBS. It's a 'family' thing.

errrr get another credit card?

AMEX has to be one of most pointless cards, I have yet to find somewhere that takes AMEX only, they all take AMEX and visa and/or mastercard.

some companies make a point of not charging for Credit card/charge card use. The company I work for does. In fact although Visa/Mastercard, will charge a percentage of the transaction, this often works out to be roughly the same as cost involved in handling cash, and cheques. AMEX just takes the piss. 7% is by no means unusual for AMEX.

Allied to the fact that processors will often require that you lodge some money with them equal to the amount of x number of months trade, and you can see why a lot of retailers will just choose a single processor that will handle Visa and M/C. After all how mant AMEX card holders don't have either
a.) a VISA card
b.) a MasterCard
c.) a Switch card
or d.) a Delta card

a vanishingly small percentage I would say.

from a retailers point of view the first card we took was AMEX in one of our Scottish branches as a trial. When we rolled out Credit Cards to the whole branch network, we decided on Visa and M/C only, so you can what impression AMEX left on the company

Know what you mean.

We take it (platinum hire) however, only as some people like to use their gold cards because of kick backs from Amex...

The main reason is they have a very strict non negiotionable commision rate, and also they take the money straight of the card, and as a retailer we can wait anything up to 4-5 weeks to receive the funds from the merchant services...hence why some people simply do not like taking the card...

Amex give me 1% back on everything I spend - I use that by preference then switch to A&L or Morgan Stanley Dean Witter if they won't take it (both give 0.5 or 1% back).

If you put *everything* on the cards it adds up to a fair bit of money over the year.

I gave mine back many years ago, charge the most commission, last to pay their bills, got fed up with the "haven't you got another card" every time I tried to use it.

The humble Sainsbury's Visa does very well now, thank you....

I used to have a Gold Amex and a Corporate Amex.

Gave up the Gold because it was too expensive for the supposed benefits (none for me).

Gave up the Corp Amex, because I found it difficult to find places that took it. Even in Central London, only about 50% of places take it.

I am yet to find anywhere that doesn't take Visa/M'Card. Even Switch/Delta is everywhere now.

Amex charge cards are pointless, unless you spend a lot of company money on flights/hotels etc.

The Amex credit card is equally pointless as it is non-competitive on rates and is acepted hardly anywhere.

Get a Visa/M'Card. MBNA will give one to anyone...
