Just a suggestion really, there has been one more than one occasion when I wanted to mail someone I have met of the BBS and have been able to track down a thread with their details.

Just thought it might be a good idea if poss to have a directory of members searchable by name and location etc.

Serious suggestion this but no doubt I am due some Scoobynet wit, therefore I am donning my asbestos suit. Que the winkle heads!!

Good idea mate.

Only problem is, it's open to spam list spiders to trawl through and grab the email addresses of everyone on here in a few seconds.

There is an alternative though. We're in the process of re-writing the bbs software which we hope will include personal messaging which does not require the display of email addresses. In addition to this, we are thinking of putting to vote by the scoobynet members to possibility of actually removing email addresses all together from display but allowing anybody to be sent email through the scoobynet server.

You would basically enter your message into a form on scoobynet and say which user you want it to go to and then click send. The scoobynet server would then turn that into an email and send it to the undisclosed email address.

This means that you would be able to personally message anyone who allows is, but they would not have to disclose their email address.

What do you think?

Cheers

Simon

sounds like a good idea. A members directory would be good. private message system, ala fusetalk (what SIDC bbs uses) might be good as well.

Great Idea Scott.

Si, I've got no problem with the current email setup and find it very useful being able to lookup people's email addresses.

Hi

OK, as long as testing goes OK and it isn't too much of a load on the server, we'll set that up.

Cheers

Hi Simon,

Personally I don't mind having my e-mail address visible. One of the reasons I had my scoobynet.co.uk account was that it gave me some anonymity when posting on the BBS (other reasons being web access and supporting scoobynet).

Is it really such a problem to have the e-mail addresses visible as they are now?

ChrisB 14 June 2001 12:35 PM

http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/cool.gif - provides a nice balance between protection from spam and letting people get in touch.

ChrisB.
