Had a wee drive down a nice big motorway earlier tonight and was concerned to see that at high speed (trust me it was fast!!) the bonnet scoop looked like it was about to get ripped off, I then sat up straight to see that the whole bonnet looked like it was about to come up  Is that normal??

Katana 14 July 2002 02:00 AM

Yes. For my car anyway..

LG John 14 July 2002 02:14 AM

Cheers katana. For purly academic purposes lets assume one day I reached the cars maximum speed. Can I be pretty certian I'm not going to eat bonnet?

JackClark 14 July 2002 02:40 AM

It does it on my 01, don't remember ever noticing it on my 98.

First time I noticed it, it was a good excuse for slowing down for a while anyhow :)

scoobynutta555 14 July 2002 08:36 AM

used to do it a lot on my old wrx, it was able to do 145 mph no prob without the bonnet coming off

wrxrob 14 July 2002 10:07 AM

all you need to do is pull the latch down tighter

LoFi 14 July 2002 10:08 AM

yup, bonnet on MY01 flexes slightly above 100, don't think it is anything to be concerned about. Other cars I've had have done this, my K reg Toyota Corrolla springs to mind. Doesn't seem to cause any damage.

My bonnet flexes too, 130mph plus (on private road)in MY96 WRX. Was a worry the first time, but am used to it now (when I travel on above mentioned private road at that speed!)

Kenny my whole windscreen trim came off at 130(kph officer). That gave me a bit of a shock.

Yes my bonnet flaps about as well.

dsmith 14 July 2002 02:29 PM

Scoop on my MY95 flaps very worringly - at speed with a cross wind it can be quite alarming.

Turboteeth 14 July 2002 02:31 PM

Bonnets only flap if the car has been involved in a heavy front end accident at some time...so thats most Scoobs :)

David_Wallis 14 July 2002 02:58 PM

dont agree with the above comment.... I seriously dont see why if you mend a car properly, why it would do that... Out of all the cars ive fixed none of the bonnets have wobbled... (scoob does though) I put it down to the scoop and having an alloy bonnet.

LG John 14 July 2002 03:04 PM

Teeth you comment has got me big time worried!! :(

Aluminium? Surely not, the thing weighs a ton!

as400 14 July 2002 03:26 PM

The bonnet wobbled a lot at high speed on my previous car and the two windscreen wipers would come off the window and stick up in the air!!...but then it was a TVR Cerbera!....lol!

ZAZ 14 July 2002 07:17 PM

Some Scoobys have aluminium bonnets and some don't. The aluminium one on my 95WRX flaps a bit at speed. Have considered getting the bonnet clips you see on competition cars to make sure it stays down, anyone done this??? How much did it cost?

Graham Beal 14 July 2002 07:57 PM

Mine does it, I thought it was going to come off when I first drove it!! What Scoob have u bought mate?

swaussie 14 July 2002 08:09 PM

MY02 STi - mine flaps like a scared pidgeon above 120. First time I drove on Autobahn I stopped to make sure the bonnet was pushed down properly.

alcazar 14 July 2002 09:28 PM

Sh*t on a stick!!!!!!! Who the fcuk is looking at their BONNET when doing over 100?????
You're covering about 150 feet every SECOND, so look where you're going!!!!!!!

banshi 15 July 2002 10:49 AM

I'm with alcazar on this one.

I know the P1 has an ally bonnet and would "guess" it doesnt flex "significantly".

Took the opportunity to blow out the cobwebs on the continent. A quick glance at the speedo confirmed the needle was beyond the MPH lettering. Other than that my attention was focussed potential hazards much further than 2ft from my windscreen

LG John 15 July 2002 10:54 AM

When you see the bonnet flapping around at 100 and whatever it defo registers as a 'hazard' to me!

SiPie 15 July 2002 10:56 AM

Yes my bonnet flexes too when at high speed...but it will not blow open and that's tested to over 150mph.

Useful hint. Try strapping a Saxo or modified pug owner to the bonnet. Although this may slightly reduce visibility and affect the cars drag co-efficient it does stop that worrying bonnet scoop flex.

NotoriousREV 15 July 2002 12:09 PM

My bonnet does at at legal speeds. Oh wait, 85mph isn't legal, is it? :D

dsmith 15 July 2002 12:32 PM

Well when I do over 100 (in Germany ;) ) I tend to look out the front - most f which is filled with a scoop that appears to be attempting to leave the car.

There is a bridge near me that is quite high and open. Crossing that at 70 in a high wind also gives the same affect. The scoop hasnt come off yet :D

gareth60 15 July 2002 12:43 PM

Never noticed that in my UK MY99, but in the UKSti and the Alloy bonnet it flex's even at low speeds.

Gareth.

David_Wallis 15 July 2002 01:17 PM

when you driving along its because you are looking that you see the fcuker trying to part company with your car... When doing that sort of speed the other things that help is knowing what your car is doing... as trying to explain why my bonnet landed on the car behind me isnt top of my 'to do' list.

David

Yorkie 15 July 2002 07:09 PM

Saxoboy, if your car is a UK supplied MY99 which I suspect it is, it will have a steel bonnet. All MY01/02's however now have aluminium ones.
