Hi All,
This has probably been done to death but,I have just bought a Pipercross filter for my scooby. I have heard a lot of talk about MAF damage by oil based filters. Anybody have any experience with the pipercross filter or advice ? |
I suppose that most on here would expect me to say something!
I had a pipercross on my UK99 turbo for about 6months, the MAF sensor started 'playing up' a while ago...last week it shouted "GAME OVER". I managed to get the part number (from kind people on here), and ordered the MAF sensor only...all ok now. Be warned, if it is a 98/99/00 (I think), the MAF is very susceptible to oil, water and grit. Cheers, MD. |
I was consideringa pipercross, myself, would a K&N be better?
I only want a budget one! |
I would just say that on the later models there is a real risk of stuffing the MAF sensor by oil mist contamination.
You should read some of the posts on this subject. A lot of people use K&N and have no problems, some do. I dont think that it is the make of filter that is the issue, it is the fact that they use an oil to filter the 'fine' particals. Good luck. |
I would advise heavily against a Pipercross.
I have been sitting in a car round track when the MAF sensor went. I have heard lots of people say their MAF sesnor went with the installation of a Pipercross, the later scoobs are especially vulnerable. K&N seem to be fine. |
Agree with that moles dad its not the make its the oily stuff they are covered in:eek:
|
I've had a Pipercross on for ages and my MAF is still going strong..
|
I have a Pipercross air filter on my 98 uk car, i've not had it long but on the instructions I did notice it says to not oil the filter unless using in extreme conditions. Are there 2 different types available?
|
Katana, perhaps you is lucky, what my is your car?
GBruce, dont know if there are two types, perhaps the manufacturer has had feedback re oil mist problems?? If you havnt oiled it then it cant put oil on the MAF! I am(for now), stuck with the Pipercross as I cannot spend any money for a while, I have washed and 'de-oiled' the filter and will see if that works ok...if its not oiled it cant put oil on the MAF. My only reservation with this is that it may not 'filter' as well as the oil is used to 'catch' the very fine particles (dust). |
Pipercross and HKS Racing Suction Kit are both prone to killing MAF's on the 99/00 cars.
APS and K&N seem to not cause a problem. If the car is pre 99 then most don't seem to cause a problem due to the sturdier design. Matt :) |
Mine is a MY97 so hopefully it will be ok, it was off a 98sti he said he had no probs. Until a truck crashed into him from behind !!
|
Had a Pipercross filter for a year and a half on my MY98 WRX with no problems at all...
|
Yep, it should be fine on your car then.
Matt :) |
Just for the record ... 3 MAF's gone in 4 months with a PiperCross.
|
Oh, and MY98 should be OK MAF wise, it's only MY99/00.
