Hi,

Fitted my dawes last night and im getting some strange things going on..!!

Ive set it to run about 0.9 bar held

My boost doesnt seem to be smooth.... if i accelerate the boost will reach about 0.7 bar by around 3000rpm then when i reach the higher revs like 5000rpm the boost will jump to about 1 bar.... my problem is, with the normal set up (i.e no dawes) my boost would nearly reach max (0.9bar) by about 3500-4000rpm but with the dawes fitted its only managing to get there after 5000rpm...

Would removing the restrictor thats in the pipe from the turbo nipple to the dawes help in any way i.e by smoothing the boost out so it is totally controlled by the dawes..!!I dont want to turn the dawes up anymore other wise i will be spiking higher....when ive had this fitted on an old car the boost was very smooth from 3000rpm and held that max boost all the way to redline nearly..!!

Any thoughts would be great..!!

try setting it up without using the standard boost control solonoid, works much better ;)

just finished my latest project, posting the pics when i download them.

Jonny,

Ive got it set up with the dawes just inline between the turbo nipple and the wastgate.... but saw that there is a restrictor in the pipe coimg from the turbo...i kept this in place but took the pipe off one end of the restrictor and fitted the dawes in line there and put bolts in the other spare pipes...

As per these instuctions..!!

take the restrictor out,is the dawes new???

dhorwich 08 July 2002 07:05 PM

Not brand new.... but ive cleaned it out, i recon its because of the restrictor im off to take it out now.....

Whats your new project then..!!!!

I was pretty impressed by your new intercooler..!!

what was the results with the restrictor out then dan???

dhorwich 08 July 2002 10:09 PM

jonny,

You were right alot better..... might need to turn it up abit though.... max pressure is still not reached until i get over 5000rpm though....

Does yours get straight upto say 0.9 bar at about 3000 and then hold it all the way to redline or there abouts..???

think it could be my boost gauge...!

Dan

jonny gav 08 July 2002 11:06 PM

yeah mate it does but mine is the race one, wich boost gauge have you got mate?

dhorwich 09 July 2002 01:40 PM

just a racetech one... im getting an autometer one soon....

When i had the dawes fitted on my old car it pulled 0.8 bar from low revs all the way to redline but its different on this car... think its probably due to the difference on the turbos... the scoob one on ours (1995) is quite large....

When you say not brand new, if you mean you got it from someone elses car, it may have had its bleed hole drilled. For the older cars the 0.5 hole is fine, but with the newer smaller turbos most had the hole opened to 1.5mm. If this is the case with yours it may give the effects you are seeing.

Just a thought.

Hi,

I bought it brand new but had it on another car is what i meant.... the hole is only the 0.5mm one...

I think my boost gauge is not very accurate so im going to set it up with a new one when it arives..!!

Just one last question did everyone seal the threads on the dawes or not im thinking it could be leaking from here some how...????

dan...:)

dhorwich 09 July 2002 06:34 PM

Just had a better look at my relief valve/dawes and it look like the bleed hole is about 1mm diameter.... does this mean i need to buy a new one or can i some how make the hole smaller..???

Is the bleed hole on the dawes for the earlier scoobs exactly 0.5mm....

Who sells the dawes in the UK and how much are they...??

What MY have you got?

Matt :)

STD is 0.5mm, best way to check is to see which drill bit fits in. If its too large you can fill the hole with solder and then re-drill it.

1995 wrx... thought about solder...

i will give it a go..!!

Solder works well and flows on the brass quite nicely - don't use too much. Let it cool, then file the surface smooth and it is a nice seal. Then redrill the other side to the size you want.

cheers john....!!
