23kish,what would do?Will defo want to go on a track to cack, but which is the best option?
and if you would go for the old shape, which one!! [This message has been edited by dba (edited 06 June 2001).] |
For 23K.
IF you are looking for the convience of a UK warranty and can wait then in a few months P1's will be down to that price. If you want to be less 'stand out' then any MY00 UK model, add the Prodrive performance pack(£2000) then add 17 inch wheels(£1100) AP 6 pot brakes(£1600) and use the rest of the money for a holiday. OR if you want to go the import route, buy an STI 5 or 6 then add then wheels and brakes as above, again you should have money left over. The new model, you could add bits to it, to ramp up the performance but unless you imported then you're not going to get much change from 23K with the brakes etc etc If it were my money i'd go the MY00 UK turbo route and add bits to that because: 1. I still get a 3yr warranty with it. 2. Parts are easier to come by. 3. I can take it to any subaru dealer to service/fix. 4. I don't need to mess around with octane boosters 5. Insurance is cheaper 7. It's easier to sell on and depreciates less 8. In the real world there is'nt much in it between a PPP'd UK car and a standard STI. 9. I'm a lazy sod who likes the easy life. Either way(except the P1 and MY01) you should have plenty of change from 23K. It depends on if you like the quiet easy life or are prepared to travel further and wait longer for servicing/spares. |
Another way is to buy an ex demo MY01, add PPP and Alcons. Or brand new, you could do the above for £23.6k.
I'd go the MY01 route against a MY00 anyday of the week. The MY01 with PPP will be a great car. plus as new mods come out you can enjoy adding them. Jonathan |
thanks for the replies chaps. But i must say im disappointed.6000 members and only 2 replies?
I genuinely need help choosing one of the many models and mods available.plus of course where who how much etc.I expected better from the other 5998!! still, not want a reputation for being a whinging get!! thanks again.Just have to settle for emailing Doc to death next year instead!! |
Dave.
I'm sorry that two replies in 12 hours isn't up to scratch! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/rolleyes.gif At the end of the day there is just so much choice at that money it's unreal. On eof the best things to do would be to come to a meet or track day and see various combinations in action. Personally, I'd either hold on a bit and wait for a P1 or buy a new shape car with a PPP. I doubt you'd be unhappy with either one. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif Stef. |
Well, just got rid of two MY00's (SS decat system, ITG, 17" P1 wheels & S02's).
We picked up two new MY01's last Saturday (Carolyn's, red mica and mine blue/black mica), they pay their first visit to Pete this Saturday - on shopping list: Brembo/AP brakes Leda suspension 18" Speedlines (mine), 18" P1 alloys (Carolyn's) (both gold http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif)plus S03's on mine and Pzero rossos on Carolyn's. Full SS decat exhaust/ITG filter PIAA drive lamps (off our MY00's) Colour coded Morette's Scoobysport rear wing PPP - when available..... So i'll let you know..... http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif [This message has been edited by Dave T-S (edited 06 June 2001).] |
Dave,
They cost a little bit more than 23K each though did'nt they http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif Personally I would avoid demonstrators like the plague. They will not have been run in correctly. Red lined at every chance and generally abused from new. |
Neil - yeah - just a bit http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif - good point - sorry, I got carried away - just like Pete Croney did on my wallet....hehehe http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

23kish
well...... if i was starting all over again purchasing now i'd definitely be trying an STi...V or VI depending on cost. enough specialist places around for servicing and you get extra toys over a standard uk car. if its uk you want for friendly dealers, insurance, eaiser to resell then a low mileage RB5 would be high on my list to test drive. Everyone seems to rate them as just about the best scoob going ? personally i'm still not convinced by the MY01 although i've only so far had a quick 30 min test drive in one. P1 deals also make it a worthwhile look ! you need to do some serious test driving before parting with your cash. plenty of choices out there for you - think of the test driving fun you can have http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif cheers steve |

Will defo be trying to get to either a scooby meet or a track day. Be interested to hear what Doc has to say as he seems to defo favour the older car and mods as opposed to the P1.I assume Daves mods will come to 7/8k? Noone has mentioned a 22b.Why are P1s a better bet? |

Which of course means if I had read your original post properly before I replied I can't count very well....... http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/redface.gif Having been round Bedford in Pete's car and out in it on the road it is bloody impressive though... |
Dave, is importing a new one from Belgium out of the question?
If not then you can do that for £16000 if you can wait 5 months (not as if you are in a hurry). £7k worth of mods ???? The mind boggles! I'm sure Prodrive would quite happily find a use for it though. |

So the choice is an old one plus 7k of mods OR a brand new WRX with 7k worth of mods.
Now I'm going to stick my neck out here and claim that the new one with that much modding will be a better car than the old one because you are starting off with a chassis with more long term potential and mucg more rigidity. (Waiting for the chop...) |
A few lines to read before you buy a MY00
HESITATION (its just a "characteristic of the car according to Subaru - tell that to the owners!!) CLUTCH JUDDER RESALE VALUES OLD MODEL Go for the MY01 and get a PPP!!!! EASY CHOICE!! Jza |

You only have to drive a short distance to feel the rigidity of the new shell - less body flexing means the suspension can do its job better. |
Jza,
I think all of the above probably apply to the new model as well from what I have heard on this site. As for resale Thats about as sad as the front of the MY01 but given time will make it a bargain. I think P1 route or MY01 with mods. 23k spent on an old shape - you'd never see your money back. |
Jza,
Hmmmm clutch judder??? its common but that dont mean your clutch is going to fail http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif i get it "SOMETIMES" but not "ALL" the time (mainly when its colder than normal) and whats this hesitation lark???? ive heard that MY01's suffer from it more than MY00's http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif oh and my MY00 doesnt suffer from it at all!! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif But both are nice cars and there are alot of improvements in the MY01 over the MY00, but i like raw power still http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif ive not got to the stage where im putting my slippers on and smoking a pipe yet http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif Tony (MY00 PPP and loving every minute of it http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif) |

sti V type r or type ra v limited,
type r is essentially a P1, but costs from 14 to 16k. Use 7 to 9k on mods, which are transferable from car to car, and you will have a beast. |
