Thanks again to T-uk for his brave efforts with the spanners.
Boy was this fun to fit. Jack the engine up a bit and extract the old uppipe with the turbo still in place. Bit tricky to assemble the new one and manifold on the car, but eventually it went on. However, during fitting we managed to push in the lower rubber semicircular cam cover "plug" :eek: and it threw out oil everywhere onto my nicely applied heat wrap, which produced some very objectionable fumes! We managed to get the rubber back in and now seems fine. There is a small leak at the middle expansion joint to fill and a bit more wrapping to do. On the road, initially it felt disappointing as we were driving very gently to make sure there were no oil leaks. After being happy about this, it seems the boost threshold is pushed about 300 RPM up the rev range, and the achieved boost was 2 PSI lower than before. However, in the 4000-7000 RPM despite the lower boost it is pulling harder, so a good result. Should improve further with the right mapping and a proper backbox on as should the sound, which at present is smooth but very muffled. Seems quieter on cruise, boxer beat now faint but still just present. [Edited by john banks - 7/6/2002 9:26:34 PM] |
I presume that was an exhaust manifold that you replaced, if so, was it (is it) equal length?
What is the thought behind the wrapping? Is it sound reduction or heat? Thanks in advance, MD. |
exhaust wrap, tell me about, just finished putting the car back together and went for a spin, 5 min later and there's plumes of smoke coming from everywhere, mainly from the uppipe :rolleyes:
noticed a couple of worried looking pedestrians at junctions ;) kev :) |
nice to hear you got your car on the road again

Yeah was this just the up pipe or the whole manifold ?
|
Both. I will log some airflows by RPM and boost pressure and compare them with some I did before in 3rd gear from low down to red line.

Nice one, seems like I missed all the fun ;) I know airflow will be a good indication of increased performance but depending on things such as exhaust backpressure, some of the charge can be lost to exhaust during valve overlap. This may throw you some strange values for mapping ! It would be interesting to see some acceleration data :) Is it possible to retrieve from your files, before and after 3000>7000 RPM times, recorded in say 3rd gear on a level road ? Andy |
Do ypou need to wrap an up pipe as i have still to this on me fugly, read in Iclub that they seem to do it on fuglys

Wrapping replacement Stainless Steel exhaust parts is a good idea for a number of reasons;
Overall, a "good thing". Duncan ;) MY01 with wrapped uppipe and downpipe. |
