Hi Folks,

I've managed to get a bit of time to update our XTR² build diary. If you are interested in seeing what me and Craig have been up to then check out http://www.xtr2.net

Cheers

Ian

Building cars is fun - honest :D

Is that the one with the K-Series engine or the Impreza engine ?

johnfelstead 03 July 2002 01:17 AM

Hyabusa Engine David! :D

DominicA 03 July 2002 08:13 AM

That looks awesome!!!

Looking good guys. Keep up the good work

Cheers for your support guys.

It was very daunting at first embarking on a car building project. Neither of us had huge amounts of experience of mechanics at this level but I'm pleased to say we are learning fast and enjoying it a great deal :D

This is one of the reasons behind the P1 sale - it eclipses the P1s performance on a level you would not believe. Golf PD150 for daily driving - XTR² for the sunny weekends and track work/competition.

Really want to drive it now - still a few months away I think.

Cheers

Ian (and CraigH i guess too)

Hyabusa Engine David
Ah yes (I knew it was some high revving thingum). Reason I asked, was that when I spoke to them last month, they said they had too many problems with the current engine and were soon going to be switching to the Impreza engine, which doesn't need to be tuned within an inch of it's life, isn't that much heavier, and can be sourced 2nd hand from Japan.

Its good the site is updated again. I checked it 6 weeks ago and it wasn't working at all. I finished an ultima in March so I am interested in your build alot

By the way I heard a rumor that there is a problem with the chassis or steering lock or something. Whats the deal?

Sieze 03 July 2002 10:11 AM

The scratches in alloy tank can be polished out so chin up! Westfield will tell you how, basically start with a meduim wet/dry (with oil) and progress to a fine sand paper. It can take alot of time but it WILL get rid of most scratches and the tank will be like a mirror (which makes it worthwhile alone)

Other comments:

Bloody hell thats a big oil cooler for a 1.3L !

I talked to Westfield in Jan about why they don't use veined vented discs. They told me they needed to keep the discs hot! Now having driven the ultima in the wet I can tell you that competition pads really make the brakes snatch when the disc is cold. Its no big problem but you might need to use a softer pad.

Don't let the build get you down. If you feel that way one day then go have a beer and start the next. I guarantee the solution will present itself. Remember the XTR2 is a very new kit and not developed. Any bits you get stuck on they will be clarifying in the build manual for the next people.

David,

It depends who you speak to at Westfield - Busa engines are probably the best compromise of reliability, lightweight and power. Assuming you take a few precautions of dry sump tank etc.

a Busa engine complete weighs around 80kg - there is now way a Scoob engine with all ancilleries and gearbox will weigh that.

Plus the Scoob engine won't fit in - not without major surgery anyway - no where for exhaust, not enough room for gearbox, fuel tank, battery etc etc - we've looked at my engine and it just won't go in.

Also, as factory cars have to have BRAND new engines for SVA, sourcing 2nd hand from Japan is unlikely - and as Westfield charge £6k for a Busa engine, think of a number and double it for a WRX/STI engine and box.

From what I can gather, they had a brainstorming session and someone mentioned it, now the rumours out of control. Unless they're coming out with a complete new chassis already of course.

Whatever you say Craig, just don't say I didn't tell you when they announce it.

CraigH 03 July 2002 11:23 AM

Perhaps you're getting confused with another model David as all the bike engined cars are supplied with bog std factory engines.

DavidBrown 03 July 2002 11:57 AM

There's always the possiblity that I'm wrong, but there's also the likelyhood that I'm right. ;)

The chap I spoke to at length (about 3 weeks ago) was part of their technical team (can't name names) and seemed quite resolved to using Impreza engines in some form or other (track only cars ?)

Of course, anything can change.

CraigH 03 July 2002 12:13 PM

That's what bothers me David - other people I'd take with a pinch of salt but i reckon you're a bigger know it all than me ;)

Am gonna check it out now :)

gregh 03 July 2002 02:16 PM

So your not ready to build one for me yet ;)

very jealous, looks a great car in the making!

Greg

Mossman 03 July 2002 04:23 PM

Ian/Craig,

Really have enjoyed looking at the site and the progress. Really looking forward to seeing it on track!

Happy building!

Mossman
:):)

igratton 03 July 2002 09:30 PM

Mossman, we can't wait to get it on the track either :D

Sure - we could build you the car - we wouldnt however be able to say which decade it would be finished in ;)

Cheers Guys

Ian.

CraigH 04 July 2002 10:09 AM

Can I actually say we are looking for people to test drive the car on it's first outing.

They must be expendable as we can't guarantee which bits are gonna fall off or stay on ;)

Form a queue if you are a suitable applicant :D

AndyC_772 04 July 2002 11:35 AM

I can think of worse ways to go. Count me in for an early ride :D

A.
