Scooby Dooby Blue 07 February 2002 09:59 AM

I've just downloaded an .avi file

When I try to play it, all I get is computer noise (like loading a ZX Spectrum game).

Any tips on what to do would be gratefully received.

Paul :D

Just realised...I think it IS in VCD format already.

*video footage* - GOOD QUALITY TS-VCD.part1.DivX.avi

Would this explain my problems?

Should I burn the file onto disc and see if it runs on my DVD player?

Paul

The introduction on my version is actually just the start to a zx spectrum game, with all the credits for whoever ripped the video ... then it goes onto spiderman

Andy :)

It was part2 I tried to watch 1st and this was all just noise :(

I wouldn't mind so much if I wasn't using a 56K modem to download .5Gb of data (5days)

super_si 02 July 2002 10:23 AM

Scooby Dooby Blue 02 July 2002 10:26 AM

Windows Media Player?

Paul

super_si 02 July 2002 10:45 AM

lol nothing illegal about it!

BL 02 July 2002 10:55 AM

Im using Power DVD to watch it. excellent piece of software & plays all formats.

You can also transfer it onto VCD format & watch it on your DVD player.

Have a look at the following site for step by step instructions

I've tried running it on PowerDVD to no avail.
Don't see the point in converting it if it doesn;t work in its original format :(

Paul

InvisibleMan 02 July 2002 11:22 AM

InvisibleMan 02 July 2002 12:03 PM

its due to copyright laws - downloading films is kinda illegal

InvisibleMan 02 July 2002 12:08 PM

InvisibleMan 02 July 2002 12:25 PM

rik1471 02 July 2002 12:28 PM

Watch it at the pictures you cheap b4stard

InvisibleMan 02 July 2002 01:43 PM

right click one the file & look in properties. What format is the video done in?

InvisibleMan 02 July 2002 01:50 PM

which media player are you using? There are two.
Windows media player 7 - the one with the fancy graphics or the original media player - mplayer.exe in the windows directory, that is the more basic plain version.
The older one generally plays better than the new one. Try that. Oh & make sure its fullscreen cos it doesnt work in a window - youll see it playing for abit then it stops but fullscreen it works fine

InvisibleMan 02 July 2002 01:52 PM

oh & btw if any of my help works, my fee is...send me a copy ;)

Scooby Dooby Blue 02 July 2002 01:54 PM

I give up ! :(

InvisibleMan 02 July 2002 06:31 PM

havent you worked it out yet?

right click the file icon. goto properties & summary. This tells you what codec has been used for audio & video - what does the video say? - this will tell you what you need to use to play it.

try media player 6 & 7
divx v.1 / 4 / 5
quicktime 4 / 5
windvd / powerdvd

its gotta be one of them

InvisibleMan 02 July 2002 07:46 PM

how about sharing the info?

ChrisS/P1 02 July 2002 10:40 PM

It states that its a DIVX encoded AVI in the filename, and at a rough guess it's probably using the 5.02 codec (seeing as it's a new file). Download the DIVX 5.02 bundle, which will install the required codec for media player, and also the divx 2.0 player (which is quite usefull as it lets you view the first part of partially downloaded files, to decided if its worth continuing).
Found a good piece of software called 'TPMGEnc 2.5', which can extract DIVX encoded files to MPG format. All you have to do then is split the MPG in to 65 minute blocks, and then write them to VCD's using Nero. Does take a bit mind you (about 10 hours on my machine).

InvisibleMan 03 July 2002 11:58 AM

oh make you install the basic Divx bundle as that other one contains some spyware?
