P.S. You could order a universal one (much cheaper - don't think they have Impreza Turbos in the States anyway) and get someone to fabricate a fitting kit. There are a few companies that can do this.

They said it would, and they were right !

Six months using a Pipercross "wet" filter (induction kit) and it finally died.

Came back from hols, started car, CEL came on...drove up the road in a very poor state.

I have tried the brake/carb cleaner trick, but after ECU reset it still says "GAME OVER".

Looks like its hand in pocket time again...and change to "dry" mesh filter to boot.

Dont say I (they) didnt warn you :(

I was very near to buying a K+N57i kit a few weeks back when come kind chap emailed me and warned me not too for the old MAF chestnut.

Hope you get it sorted with minimal cash.

Other than that, how's thing's m8?, I'm a daddy now :) (Benjamin, came 9 weeks earlier than expected :eek: )
So my mods have gone in favour of prams and cots and things now..
At lease I got the PD rear spoiler in time

Oh, I heard you don't have to buy the whole MAF by the way, just the element bit is available incase u didn't know, £80ish I think..

Thanks John, I have the part number but I cant believe that our dealers are going to allow people to buy the sensor if it is cheaper...or am I just a cynic ?

Well, perhaps I shouldn't be such a cynic after all.

Of the two main dealers that I spoke to today, both said that the part was available and would get it for me by Wednesday.

At £61 odd plus vat it is a very welcome reduction in cost !

(one dealer did start quizzing about how did I know that the MAF had gone and how did I get the part no. etc).

Anyway, hopefully Wednesday will be Blast Off day if all goes well.

Don't feel too bad...STi recently updated their filter because they had some "issues" <read: box loads of broken AFSs>

Hope the new one does better for you (but while the new one is more robust, it still does not like anything but dry type filters, even then it seems panel types are safest).

Is that MAF part number the same on an STi5 or do i need a diferent MAF sensor?

I just replaced my STi panel filter with a new Paper one and it's strangling the engine above 6500rpm. I am trying to buy a genuine STi replacement but i dont think anyone stocks them in the UK.

i want a genuine STi filter, not an aftermarket one. The genuine ones are much better when it comes to MAF protection and work perfectly at 280BHP. The paper one i put in is strangling the poor thing, that has to come out! :D

johnfelstead, surely there must be someone on here who can source genuine STi parts OR knows a link to a supplier (?).

I have a very good cold air/water feed pipe complete with fittings for sale if you would like to try it. :)

I have two on order from STi now, along with my anti surge fuel pump assembly. Unfortunately they wont be here until after the National day so i'll have to put something in temporary as the paper one i have in now is incredibly restrictive.

Is the P1 filter a diferent spec to a UK turbo? After all that is an STi5 with a few mods.

I'm glad you found them, re the P1/UK turbo...I really dont know, here I go again with assumption (assumption..the mother of all fcuk-ups), I would have thought that they would be the same, although Prodrive may have specd a slightly less restrictive version so as to cope with all that extra power :p

Just to say every filter seems to have some kind of downside. Oiled foam or cotton gauze can screw MAF sensors (this is a problem on recent turbo VAG models as well), the Blitz stainless mesh is dry but also heard of several failures as it either doesn't filter enough crap out, or flows too much air causing too much oil breather pipe suction - another possible cause of MAF contamination on some engines apparantly.
Some people say foam filters can break down after a while and can be ingested into turbo engines, and yet the ITG panel filter seems to be used by most Scooby tuners.
Read something about APEXi's dry but ultra fine filtering induction kit, and wondered why that isn't used much over here, I think there is at least one UK importer. APEXi seems popular in the States (had incredible test results, filtered as good as paper but gave power nearly as high as the Blitz)
So whats the proper STi panel filter made out of then?

What about HKS? Thought they were oiled bit now read they are coated in a special sticky substance that doesn't knacker MAFs.

TurboBoost, If anyone has any info and/or data on the Apexi I would be most interested to see it.

What we have to contend with in this country is (rare it would seem), hot dusty days, then a batch of wet (in my case), gritty days.

If we had consistant weather we could then, perhaps, choose a filter system to suit the conditions.

As with most things in life, it is all about compromise and having a filter system which can cope with a range of conditions.

I would dearly love to run the standard air box, but as previously stated, I have a front mount which dictates the use of a 'cone' filter.

I have thought of getting the FMIC pipe altered to allow use of the air box, my concern is that it will cause the airflow to be 'slowed' and introduce more lag.

Anyway, at the moment I am happy that its working again and am out every ten minutes for a 'blast' :) :)

The part number is spot on, but what appears on the sensor itself is different.

This is from a post on our Legacy group: "The Legacy BE5/BH5 A, B, & C types' number is confirmed as C36-700 R92 (the R92 defining turbo application - if you get one with R82, that is for NAs). This AFS is also used on the F & G type GC8s."

The Subaru part number only appears on the box it comes in (at least in Japan).

Hope this may help a bit.

I have an Apex'i on mine, never a problem. Had J&R before and after some time I had MAF problems due to the oil.

The whole assembly code is 507-F003 and a new spare element (without the mounting brackets) is 500-A021. The filter fits perfectly after removing the airbox and come with 2 mounting brackets. Also from all the Japanese makes it is the one with the best filtration abilitiy.

AJbaseBloke, I am not sure that this new unit is 'actually' different to the old unit, all I can confirm is that it works on my UK99 turbo.

I do hope that it is the supposed more 'robust' item though.

As for part numbers, I havnt a clue...I got the number from this bbs.

Mole, to shed some light on the confusion of "sturdier or not" ...

It is my understanding that there is a new Bosch sensor, with the exact same Subaru partnumber, only to be identified by a blue and yellow dot instead of the green dot.

My last shipment of replacement MAF's however, with the kind help of Wrexy, were "green dotted" ones only.

EvilBevil, I really didnt notice any dots, I was far too eager to get the bloody thing fitted and get back on the road :)
