Help me out. This is quite serious actually, so no idea why I am posting here.

Thought it may be a good idea, seeing as it was *free* to trial McAfee personal firewall software. Every five seconds it keeps telling me someone is trying to gain access to my PC. What's it all about??? Who are these people and what the f*** do they want??

If they're after top secret info, they're wasting their time!

mark_h 27 June 2002 06:09 PM

Depends what the message is Clare. When I'm on BTOpenworld, I get hack attempts quite a bit.

AllWheelDrift [iDub] 27 June 2002 06:10 PM

Maybe they're just trying to find a pic of your new hairstyle? ;) In any case, I'll stop trying to hack you. :p

cryptwalk 27 June 2002 06:11 PM

Just let um in if you've nothing to hide.;)

Clarebabes 27 June 2002 06:11 PM

Hmmm, funny how it originates in Canada. Perhaps it's a wicked Canadain.... :D

ChrisB 27 June 2002 06:11 PM

Some of it is people doing port scans (like a thief seeing if you've shut all your house windows). Other 'attempts' are from other miss configured PCs sending out data they shouldn't onto the 'Net.

Clarebabes 27 June 2002 06:12 PM

So how do I use the info the firewall gives me?

mark_h 27 June 2002 06:13 PM

They're not looking for anything you've got. They're most likely looking to see if there's anything they can exploit - like an email server or trojan. They can then use that to launch an attack on someone else, which would be traced back to you.

Edited 'cos I can't spoll

Clarebabes 27 June 2002 06:13 PM

OK, so it's a good idea to have this software then?

Not too sure about the $30 fee though :(

cryptwalk 27 June 2002 06:14 PM

It's great isn't it... Modern technology. :D

Clarebabes 27 June 2002 06:15 PM

Grat??? WTF ;)

Anyway, off now. See you later!

ChrisB 27 June 2002 06:15 PM

Try ZoneAlarm Clare - the basic version is free for home users

http://www.zonelabs.com/store/conten...ap_za_grid.jsp

You'd need to uninstall the other firewall 1st though.

mark_h 27 June 2002 06:16 PM

On the whole, it's a good thing to have. XP's got a firewall builtin, but I've never used it.

mark_h 27 June 2002 06:17 PM

I'd forgotten about ZoneAlarm. I used to use that, it does the job :) I use Norton Firewall now though.

cryptwalk 27 June 2002 06:17 PM

Where? I havent seen it?!?!?!

cryptwalk 27 June 2002 06:18 PM

I used to have zonealarm pro, but XP didnt like it and fcuked it off.

AllWheelDrift [iDub] 27 June 2002 06:23 PM

I tried a few firewalls, but I couldn't get any of them to work with my internet connection sharing software.

mark_h 27 June 2002 06:31 PM

Norton Firewall works fine with my home network sitting behind it :)

MATTeL 27 June 2002 07:06 PM

Why isn't this in computer related?

mark_h 27 June 2002 07:08 PM

You get a better quality answer in here :p

mark_h 27 June 2002 07:08 PM

corner? :D

Clarebabes 27 June 2002 07:27 PM

Er wibble?

I didn't want to put it in Computer Related because I know there are expert computer buffs in here all the time. That's why software is so full of bugs

Idoru 27 June 2002 07:29 PM

I am fairly certain that the different forums were set up with a reason and specific purposes in mind.

mark_h 27 June 2002 07:29 PM

No it isn't Clare

There are bugs in software so that we get maintenance contracts etc :p

mark_h 27 June 2002 07:29 PM

If it worked right first time, we'd have less work to do

mark_h 27 June 2002 07:35 PM

Damn, it's been moved. Can we muppet and get it back again? ;)

Clarebabes 27 June 2002 07:36 PM

This is not where it is supposed to be.

I'll kill him next time I see him

AllWheelDrift [iDub] 27 June 2002 07:36 PM

A thread moved out of the muppet forum? Must be a record of some sort. :p I'm sure we can get this moved back though. ;)

mark_h 27 June 2002 07:37 PM

Managed to get a thread moved twice I think :)

Wibble :D

AllWheelDrift [iDub] 27 June 2002 07:37 PM

I did some firewall testing once. On an unrelated note, anyone care to buy a PC with minor fire damage? ;)
