Now replaced original ecu with tek 2. Took 10 mins to do tops and when turned engine on it instantly sounded different(much smoother). It was that different the wife came out of the house and said "you must have changed your ecu thingy as it sounds alot smoother" complements indeed.
Couldnt friday night as told "you will wake the boys up". they are already tuned into scooby's noise and wake up when they hear it, as they think dad is home. So took it for a blast on Saturday!!! Kick on baby!!! I have a new car. I'm not too bothered what BHP is along as there is enough torque there to drive it easily. It will now pull from 25mph in fourth very smoothly and very quickly. Previously had to 35mph+ and would sometimes get judder. Near where i live there are a couple of roads that are about 2.5 to 3 miles long and dead straight nowhere to hide for cops either. Previously would be able to touch 135mph late at night nobody about. Tried it on saturday night and had to lift off when speedo read 150mph as i thought it was very silly. (ps dont do this very often, and make sure there is absolutley no cars about) Conclusion; MONEY WELL SPENT. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. |

I would probably say decat exhaust and air filter...seems to be about the standard figures increase on Tek2 upgrades with just these mods :eek:

I would like to ask you what do you think of the top end of your car (since you have fitted EcuTek 2). How are your car after 6000rpm (since you tell that you car is so much quick in think that before he is much faster). You have some boost gauge? If you have what is the pressures. Thank you. |
Top end appears to be much better above 6000rpm. On one road nearly always take it to the redline in 4th gear as didnt have much road left to go into 5th gear. Now pulls very quickly round to rev limiter in 4th and i have to change up into 5th. By the time i have to brake, ieasily have 15mph+ more on the speedo than i did before.
The boost seems to peak at about 1.2bar and then steadies itself just above 1.1bar. cheers!!! |
You'll probably go quicker if you change at 6000-6250 especially on the small turbo. That along with the cam profiles means there ain't a lot above there no matter what you do. This was proven to me from studying some drag times with various change points and also T-uk with considerably less power keeping up by using the torque.
I always thought change up only when you reach the red line or the power at the wheels in the next gear is higher than in this gear. I still think this, but it seems the the power is higher if you change up a bit earlier. Easier on your engine and intake temps as well. |
So Jonh you are telling me that even I install a Bigger turbo (has I tell you) to the pressure stay 1.1bar to red-line that I do not gain much more power??
I would like to ask you another thing, whit 1.2bar-1.1bar I need to have a FMIC or a new Top monted whill do this job whitout some effort. Thank you. |
You will gain power, but don't go over the top on turbo size thinking it will necessarily give you a peak power higher and higher up the rev range.
Intercooler depends on your ambients and how efficient the turbo is. Maybe you need to measure your intake temps and then decide? |

Three observations since fitting Tek2:- 1. I agree with upshifting just over 6k rpm 2. I have noticeable 'soot' on the tailpipe - is this normal ? 3. Over 3 brimmed tanks, fuel consumption has definitely improved even though it is 'riched up' and I expected it tobe 10% worse. I would appreciate your advice on 2 and 3 (having a rolling road etc done soon) as it seems to be running very smoothly with no obvious cause for concern. |
What MY's have you guys noticed these big improvements on? MY99 or MY00??

Puzzled. In spool up areas it is richer to cure lean spots. On full load it will be putting more fuel in overall because the airflow is higher and the intended air fuel ratios are similar ballpark - so it is still very rich hence the sooty exhausts. For cruise and idle it uses the lambda sensor. So I am genuinely surprised if you find it more economical, but happy if you do! Mine gets less economical the quicker it gets.

Two of the three tanks have been mainly motorway - but at my normal motorway cruising speeds with several 4th gear ' you're a dot in my mirror' blasts, I've had 26-27mpg whereas I had 24mpg for similar before (all Optimax). Logically I would expect to see a worsening figure for mainly on/off driving around town and A roads. Thanks for allaying my fears on the sooty exhaust - I thought as much. Previous ECU by the way was AE800 rather than the maligned 802, so I can't even out it down to that ! |

been in a week now running on bp 95ron with no octane booster, done 580 miles in that time on two tank fulls, run absolutley superb, see first post of this thread. fileed up last night with same bp garage but finally put octane booster in, only one available was stp. problem - boost dropped to 0.9 bar creeping upto 1.1 once above 4500rpm. Now drives like it did before on the 802 ecu but a little bit better. Does not pull from 25mph like it did at the begining of the week in 4th gear. Help!!! - any ideas why the sudden change????? |
The only thing you changed was the booster or could be a duff tank of fuel? Perhaps your car does not like it?
Your car would probably run better if you use SUL or Optimax. You will not get a lot of the benefit out of Tek 2 without using 97 RON or higher. |

i may be a bit lacking in the technical knowledge, but i did notice a vast improvement with the tek 2 over the original ecu, hence the original post, by continuing to use 95 ron from same bp garage used for years. nearest shell garage to me is 25 miles away. nearest sul garage i pass is 10 miles each way off my route. surely by putting octane booster in it would improve things!! |
I would go out your way for SUL - my nearest is 5-10 miles out my way and the car has not had a drop of NUL since new. You will lose a lot of the benefit from running NUL because the low octane maps for ignition are very conservative indeed. Your knock sensor will pick up more activity and the ignition timing will be retarded, possibly more fuel will be added too.
If you are not happy with it get onto Ecutek and if not happy with the outcome return it. If you are going to use an octane booster I recommend NF - no commercial link, I just get very good results with it in terms of ignition timing. TeK 2 and full decat. How much more power delivery can i really expect,at the minute my car is a standard 99my turbo with an ae800 which surges when cold.

It will still surge when cold when it has been Tek 2'd and it will still give you the half boost in 2nd gear from 30 mph after you have held it on a steady throttle. No ECU product at decent money is "perfect" - these are the weaknesses of this one, along with still using the MAF and not being end - user mappable. Other than that I know of no issues, but you need to make sure it is for you with these limitations in mind. Unichip suffers from all the same. The Link has other advantages and disadvantages.
Improvement will depend on your rolling road, but at PE a totally standard car seems to give about 220-230 BHP and a custom remapped car (any method) with decat is usually about 270-280 BHP. Probably 15 BHP of this is from the exhaust. Maybe knock 10 BHP off for a Tek 2 rather than a Tek 3 - so 25 BHP from the Tek 2 itself. Torque and driveability improvements are more impressive if you use good octane - however, if you go significantly above 100 RON you are just as likely to lose power unless the map is altered to suit. These are estimates. Shoot them down if you like :D See the Ecutek site for some dyno plots. |
Back to the fuel consumption thing after Tek 2:-
Last 5 tanks (Brimmed) MPG 1. 19.67 - Thrashed after plugging in the Tek2! 2. 21.55 - Hard-driven 3. 26.38 - Mainly motorway @ 80-90 (with a few 'red mist' moments) 4. 27.51 - As above but more heavier traffic 5. 22.17 - Fast A road & urban I expected to be down to 20mpg average, but it really is about the same as before - you can let the torque do the work from 3-4k a lot of the time. Any other views ? |
If you are using less revs as you say to achieve the same result then perhaps that is the reason for your improved economy, but I can't think of any other reason just now.

now done 80+ miles in car today and still feels to have lost the driveability that it had on friday. hope it is the fuel, cant wait for tank to run out.
i have noticed the following though 2nd gear 0.9 bar 3rd gear 1.0 bar 4th gear 1.1 bar 5th gear 1.2 bar any reason for this, most importantly the early spool up of the turbo seems to have gone! |
just spoken with mervyn at power engineering and i am going to try an ecu reset tonight. could be dodgy fuel, afm or lambda sensor.
