I was in Northwich, Cheshire today and saw a GT40 in Gulf colours, looked real, sounded real and had a correct period plate on (F reg I think) and had appropriate wheels (red Hallibrands I think, not some grotty 80's Revolutions)
Even my missus seemed impressed ! What are the chances that it was a real one, how much are they worth ? |
Real ones (in good nick) start at £six-figures and go up. With heritage, you are looking £seven-figures.
There are still a fair few real ones around and driven. Real ones are rediculously loud and 'metalic' sounding (you'll know what I mean if you've heard one), most copies have a more recent Ford V8 which is no where near as loud but burbles a la TVR/Cobra. Remember seeing a couple at a RMA track day a couple of years ago - very fast. Could keep pace with an F40 down the straight. |
I presume it was old style F plate, as in ABC 123F and the plate was black with silver letters? If it was a real one, the driver is a brave man :D
|
If it is the same one, I've seen it in Macclesfield a couple of times, it is a GT Developments kit, but its got all the right toys on it, Small Block Ford V8, Quad Webers, Hewland Transaxle, etc. Yes, they are pucka knock-on Hallibrands its wearing.

Was a silver/black plate

There is a real Gulf GT40 in the UK, its an ex Le Mans car and looks the mutts nuts. The chances that it is this one are small to zero. The only one I know of had the plate DHG 69G.

Didn't Noel Edmunds used to have a real one of these...? It's always the ones you least suspect !
|
AFAIK Noel Edmonds does still own two, a genuine MkII ex-Le Mans car, and a MkIV(?), the road car with a spare wheel and radio.
