Help needed - rust question
Hi all,
New, first time schoolboy owner here. Just bought a 1998 turbo 2000 this weekend. as with any 25 year old Japanese car, there’s a bit of rust, all of which will be seen to over the course. My question is to do with a particularly rusty pipe below the radiator. The rest of the engine bay looks good but I have to question this part. I’m guessing it’s a header pipe but really unsure if I’m honest. Can anyone kindly inform me what it is and if I should be concerned? picture is from between the radiator and the belt. Cheers in advance all! https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...eff276836.jpeg |
its just a heat shield for the headers

Looks like the heat shield has been jubilee clipped to stop it rattling.

Certainly seems like it! Would you say this is something that needs replacing? On the one hand a heat shield isn't critical to change because of rust, but rust has a way of spreading that I don't appreciate.

its can't "spread" anywhere as its an isolated heatshield??
there are wiring looms and such in that area so some form of shield is preferred |

I took the heat shield off wrapped the exhaust , heat shield back on then used jubilee clips , just above the heat shield is a cross over pipe , I think it’s coolant rather than oil crossover , the heat from the exhaust burns the paint off the pipe it then rots out , I’ve changed a few as it’s fairly easy to do , having the heat shield on just helps reduce temps in that area and slows down the rotting of the crossover pipe , the wrap is a bit Smokey on start up , but it’s an easy job to do 👍😁

I just used the old heat shield , it was just a v high temp one off ebay not sure who made it , but the fact the heat shield keeps it together it’s still there a number of years later , as wrap tends to break up after a while 👍😁

I had a supposed Subaru expert garage try and fail my car on MoT because "the exhaust was badly corroded".....
