Starting wrx with jump lead from battery to starter? Normal?
Hi. I bought an old nail of a blob wrx wagon.
Seller said the key needs reprogramming , last turn of the key does nothing he showed me how to start the car with a jump lead from the terminal tab on starter motor to positive on battery Now to me I’d think something can’t be right with the system, what’s to stop the car being stolen by this starting technique? so what to do? Take car to Subaru dealer to reprogram the key , I just dont want to waste time and money thanks |
Check power to starter when key is in start position. Be very surprised if you don't need a starter.

Thanks. That’d be handy if that’s all that’s wrong with it. Where and how do I test? What volts should I be getting there? Thanks mate

Small wire on starter 12v when keys turned to start position. You'll need a helper.
Sorry I'm not thinking right if it starts that way starters probably ok. Check your starter relay and any related fuses. What alarm is it cause it's very unlikely that it's only hooked up to the starter, usually the fuel pump is disabled too :thumb: |
Hi.
which relay and which fuses? I did look at fuse boards, couldn’t see and obvious one marked how could I tell you which alarm it is? The cars got no owners manuals or any paperwork thanks |
I did find an American yt vid on the starter relay but it’s didn’t seem relative to my car
|
If you have a fob that would be a start :thumb:

Only got this. My bugeye car has the buttons on key and the separate alarm buttons but this is a blobeye that won’t start I’ll buy a new battery today and test the relay if I can find it. I messaged the previous owner. He said one day at college it just stopped working and wouldn’t start so did the jump lead trick |
Assuming the Sigma alarm is still fitted.........
Sounds as if your Sigma Alarm may have lost it's connection to the keys transmitter. Does the car lock/unlock using the button on the key rather than manually with the key in the door lock?? Do you have the PIN code for the alarm keypad (in coin tray by drivers right knee)?? Worth a look through the relative posts in this forum and downloading a copy of the Alarm users manual. https://www.scoobynet.com/security-16/ Relay is blue, somewhere near the in cabin fuse box |
Hi. No button on key does nothing but I’ll replace battery for new first
cars all standard uk car, not been messed with thanks |
Don is the one to help you with newage locations of relays etc. I'll keep an eye out on the thread and see how you get on. PM me if you need anything :thumb:
