To map or not to map

After a bit of advice on JDM cars/UK Fuel and mapping.

I’ve got a stock legacy gt spec b wagon straight from Japan, with an ej20x motor and auto trans. 78k miles MY 2007.

I don’t think it has been mapped for UK fuel, so I have always run it on 99ron (usually momentum).

car runs fine and has never had an issue and is quick enough for me ( had it since it had done 55k miles)

1. can it be mapped for 95 or 97ron?
2. is it worth the money? Bearing in mind I am not bothered about more power.
3. Can anyone recommend a reliable company to do this in the Thames Valley or close by?

Oh and one other thing - is it possible to do a straight swap with a UK Legacy centre console ( CD/Radio/AC unit)?

the car has all sorts of crap in it like the Panasonic Strada and various hard drives in the glove box, boot and under the seat, but the current centre console looks JDM stock (but with minidisc player).

Many thanks in advance.

mapping wise you need it checked as a min. and most likely will require mapped to run correctly..........

most of the ones we have seen are detting for fun due to a very aggressive JDM ignition map and not having enough safety margin to accomodate the UK fuel........

Mapping is always a good idea as it gets everything running in harmony not just the fuel used but many factors. You’d be looking at anything from ££400-£600 for the privilege on a first map though.
As for fuel Ron I’m not sure it would make any difference if your using momentum as is ??? , Japan fuel high octane is classed as anything from 96-100 so your in that category, I’m sure an expert will be along to elaborate a bit more.
From what I understand we use and map for higher ron so we can advance timing and it helps prevent knock , again I’m no expert.

The gearbox is a limiting factor with the automatic apparently that is why they were lower output from the factory.

So far all of my 2.5 Fsti were running fine in 99 fuel pre mapping , for peace of mind worth getting a map check done even if you don’t re map , you can map on 95 but you won’t get the best out of it , Richard at FB tuning is very good and around 350£ , i would get the map checked and if it’s fine leave it alone as you said you are not looking for more power , plus the limits on your gearbox

Do some logging, see what it IS doing, better than assuming.

I don't think so. It may cause too much carbon in the engine

Who's doing it?
I'd have been nipping to Swindon, BR Developments, where Bob Rawle will help you out.

All good. The car responds a bit quicker (but was quick anyway).

Economy is about the same round town but better on a run.

Looking forward to it passing its emissions test first time on its MOT😊

Its now 290bhp from the 260 standard.

From what i've learnt with Subaru's i'd say the minimum is to get the mapping side of things checked if you buy a new car, at least that way you know what your starting with and the mapper could possibly pick up things where the car has not been running right like too rich or too lean or the air mixture is wrong etc etc
