I have a vague feeling I might have asked this before, but here goes anyhow.

I have a couple of thousand in my collection and I estimate the value to be around £10k, and growing by £200 each month.

My dad says they are covered under the house contents, but I'm a bit sceptical. If house insurance is anything like car insurance it doesn't bear thinking about trying to make a claim.

Does anyone know of any companies that offer specialist policies?

You should be OK so long as you have enough total cover for all your contents.. Especially so because as individual items their value is low.. The big problem you may have is proving how many records you actually have.. take photos.. If in doubt contact your insurer and ask.

I remember my uncle insured his collection somewhere. He had 10,000 records, which looked unbelievable, but he was a DJ through the 60's and 70's. They took up half of his garage in crates.

I have about 1,000 12", which are just insured under the house. However i have been thinking about selling them, as they are just sat in a cupboard. What do you reckon Ady? Worth selling? I always said I wouldn't, but they must be worth something now.

When we were burgled we had about 400 CD's stolen. Insurance didn't cover it, some proved to be irreplaceable. The insurance assessor said that there was a company that could find replacements of anything but it never came to anything for us.

With that many I'd add them on to the insurance as a special item and try to work out the replacement value and have that insured rather than their secondhand value of a couple of quid each. You'd want evidence of the size of the collection and preferable a list of all the titles - bet you can't remember them all :D

Dreamweaver - bear me in mind if you decide to get rid of them ;)

Mine are covered by the house insurance, but I am considering listing them individually and photograhing them just in case. Not individually of course, but maybe paying attention to particular rarities.

I try to photograph everything of value that I keep in my house just in case the worse should happen. I'd recommend doing the same :)

The best way off selling is to let someone have the lot for a rock bottom price. Saves loads of hassle you see. *ahem* ;)

DJ Dunk, how many have you got? Any interesting raraties? I have a few, I think the most valueable is Ayu - M EP, copy was on Ebay for £100 last week, pales when compared to the Madonna picture disc for £700 :eek:

I've got paper lists of every single one, with purchase date and price. I need to photocopy the lists and keep them somewhere 'off site' so to speak.

Have absolutely no idea how many I have. I've sold and lost quite a few in the past and miss them now.

I've got a few rarities. Some quite surprising, such as an original mint press of Some Justice by Urban Shakedown from 91 which has fetched around £150. Not bad really. I've been buying up old skool stuff recently, found loads on ebay.

Bought a rare press of Aphrodite - Sexual Healing recently for a couple of pounds :eek:

I have mainly be buying up classics and rare remixes from 91-95 :)

OK, what about older stuff?

Had a dig through the vinyl I've gained over the years and found a few 80's classics (blue monday 12", 1999, etc) but also some Elvis albums from around 1965, how do I find someone that will pay well for these not just give me £50 for the lot?

Any ideas?

Also have all the Slammin Vinyl stuff, including picture discs :)

And all Reinforced stuff - 4 Hero etc

I'm no expert but I don't think you would be covered on you household Insurance - I believe collections like this as treated as a set of Individual items (unless you Insure them as a collection) - Kinda similar - My mum had a collection of crystal glasses and the display cabinet collapsed - Insurance didn't pay out because "Each individual item had an excess of £75" rather than an excess of £75 for the lot - B@st@rds - Check you excess clauses VERY CAREFULLY !!!!!!!!

House them Securely, Catalogue them, Photograph them, and Insure them, with a specialist company.

No Household Insurer will pay out on a collection of that value, no matter what they tell you when they are touting for your business. Remember they are the same companies that will take up to two years to avoid paying out on simple car accident/theft claims!

I spoke to my insurers about this a couple of years back because I have a few CDs.

In short, "collections" normally need to be insured as special items. However, the definition of collection needs tieing down: mine says a "collection" is something that's worth more than the sum of individual parts. So you should be covered.

I'd check all the same just to put your mind at rest.

BTW IanC, my Dad has a large 50's/60's collection and he reckons most independent specialist shops will give you a fair trade valuation, but bear in mind they will still need to make a profit on the re-sale. Or put they on e-bay and see what you are offered.

I don't mind them making a profit on resale, what I don't want to do is walk into a specialist saying "I don't know what these are worth" and being ripped off.

I guess the only answer is to do some homework and find out what they are changing hands for - some (I *think*) are rare \ unusual so I may not find out what they are selling for.

I insured my Records with Direct Line about 6 years ago (dont have that policy any more) That was for approx 7,000 mixed 12"s and Albums. They wanted a list catalogueing every record with the following details on each record.

Name, When Brought, How Much Paid and Condition

The only thing about the policy is that I could not get an answer from Direct Line on replacement i.e. If the records were stolen would they pay the price that it would cost to replace a certain record now.. Needless to say that when the policy ran out I didnt renew it.. Ill just take my chances!!

My insurers need notified of anything worth over £3K in the house otherwise it's not covered.

I called to let them know of my records and they sent an assessor out to take a look.

We agreed an approx value of £30K and that was that.

It barely increased the premium as the only way a claim would be made against such a sizeable "item" would be if the house burned down.

Right firstly any collections you have should be insured sepratly, Second you should have them on file, to prove that you have them, and thirdly YOU MUST INSURE THEM SEPARATELY otherwise things could go tits up if anything went wrong, I love all music except the head banging stuff (sorry Guys) I have a collection of Beatles stuff which is priceless plus god knows how much in vinyl and other CD's my collection is insured for £50,000.

I have 800+ cds and haven't played even one for over a year now. The reason - I have them all on mp3 - in house and car. I should sell them , not insure them. Problem is record shops only give you £1 for top cds - which is why I still have them to date. I'd rather give them away to friends who come round and haven't discovered Gnotella/winmx etc yet (for purely sharing owned albums of course ;) ).

Do insure them though dude - my boss got 5k when his house burnt down in Canada to go shopping with purely for his cds - what fun!
