Issue battery/alternator?
I’m new to the forum so sorry for just jumping in but need answers. I’d appreciate any feedback
Recently bought a Hawk jdm STI it’s known by a few members here from it’s time in England. I don’t daily drive, I keep it for weekends. so here’s what happened. sometimes but not all the time when slowing down E.G parking car would stall, start again as normal maybe happen once a week. friday just gone:warmed up as normal and went for a short spin around my area. no issues saturday: warmed up as normal, soon as I took off, ABS sensor light came on, slightly excessive white smoke. Reversed back into drive, car stalled. Went to restart and nothing. Was rushing to a family event so left it. sunday: went out to start, and nothing no power completely dead. Jump start and turned first time. Checked lights all good, perfect running order, turbo timer reading 14volts, no smoke, unhooked jump leads left ticking over. After 2-3 minutes turned ignition off and went to restart and same thing happened. Car completely dead. I’ve checked for blown fuses, leaks, connections all is good I’m at my witts end please help |
Turbo Timer ?? - not needed with a watercooled turbo.
If voltage shown by your turbo time was 14v with the engine running then alternator output seems reasonable What's the car battery's "actual" state of charge? disconnected with engine off. Use this as a guide https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...625892aff4.png |
check the battery is connected properly and leads are not corroded , i always add an extra earth from negative terminal straight to the engine as it often eliminates the risk of a bad earth , if it was me new battery probably a heavier cranking / upgraded one , eurocarparts prices are often good and a new earth lead as above , my battery probably lasts two weeks before it goes flat , due to a standard subaru alarm , a cat 1 alarm and a tracker , as above if a battery keeps on getting too low it damages the battery and reduces how long they last 👍 my vxr8 is very sensitive to a poor battery or a part discharged one and throws lots of eml’s on 👍😁

You have a smart alternator also so leaving it running for 2-3mins will do nothing

Check the main positive terminal is tight on the alternator under the red rubber cap, if there's any play, nip it down / check for corrosion.
Mine was loose on my Hawk once, threw up some weird dashboard lights, one of which was rear diff temp! https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...b27621d3e8.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...978ca014f6.jpg |
Surely idea of a turbo timer is to keep the oil recirculating if you've been on a hard drive, allowing the turbo to stay lubricated while the propeller is slowing down?

it does keep the oil going round , but probably the better thing is just drive sensibly the last few miles at the end of your journey , mine gets used more to defrosting a car on a cold morning 👍😁

Yes, at first wasnt to sure both readings of battery and alternator where good. Just glad it’s not a serious problem.
