Fault code 22

Hi all just a quick one I've just plugged the 2 black connectors together under the dash for my 97 impreza and I'm getting 2 long and 2 short flashes of the cel. So I'm guessing that's code 22 knock sensor.

How do I know if this is a current fault or an old fault code? Would the CEL be lit up even in normal use if it was a current fault code?

Thanks

take the battery connection off for 15-20mins (only works on classics) and then check the codes which should be cleared..........

run the car again and see if it returns

Just buy a cheap code reader bud, there cheap as chips, think I paid £15.

OK thanks I disconnected the battery and pressed the brake pedal for 30 seconds, I've got it disconnected whilst I clean my other car so it's had a good hour disconnected so far.

Jay what reader do i need to look for? Ive got an obd2 but are these classics ssm or something?

there isn't a 'cheap' code reader for that age of car as they are not OBD2 compliant........

Mines 1998 so I'm not sure what your talking about? I use a code reader all the time.

intrigued what you have as they don't use the later normal protocol??

Will post some pictures, it's just a rubbish cheap thing. Used it loads, plugs into OBD2 port under steering column.

You will extract some information but it is little or no use the classics aren't OBD compatible.

Why does it have an obd2 port then?

Where is the diagnostic port located on these?

after i reconnected the battery and quickly had to figure out how to turn off the alarm/immobiliser, the fault was cleared and I went for about 15 mile drive and the fault didn't reappear. I'll probably just check it after a couple more journeys and see if the fault reappears. Thanks for the help

It's just a generic connector used for diagnostics hence On-Board Diagnostics

1979 — The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) recommends a standardised diagnostic connector and set of diagnostic test signals.

You probably haven't one being a 97 car they only started on the v5 98 cars :thumb:
Yours will be above the kick panel. Rectangle SSM plug.

You would be better with a vagcom/vcds KKL cable.

OK great thanks I did actually see the yellow plug when I was looking at the fault codes

jaygsi 08 May 2022 08:33 AM

Ah ok, so with 1997 there's no plug in off any sorts? Remember my missus plugging the 2 wires together under the dash on her 2000 Impreza, she read online how to do it.

The OBD style connector was adapted due to the US requirement for OBD (MY98 cars commenced building in 1997)
It was never fully implemented in UK cars until MY01(cars built from 2000) when the EOBD subset was implemented in 2000.
