Differentiating between v7 and v8/9 short blocks

I'm looking at buying a complete bottom end for transplant into my type R gc8 version 4.
I'll be using the version 4 heads and manifold etc.
Question is how do I tell what short block the wrecker is selling me? I can obviously see if it's a semi closed deck. But how do I know it's a forged piston version 7 block and not later hyper piston type from a version 8 or 9.
Maybe block markings are different?
Cheers

only the 2.0 STi MY01> blocks were SCDB - std WRX still used ODB

03MY> gained the Nitrided crank (BLACK) but the Hyperpeutic pistons............

MY01/02 used the x-drilled crank (SILVER)

not to say whatever you are looking at hasn't already been messed / rebuilt.........

I'm asking how do I differentiate by looking at the complete long block. Maybe case markings?

your title states SHORT block...........as above the crank nose is different colours

just to add that if indeed you were looking at long engines then the EU / UK spec WRX is obviously fixed cam whereas the STi engine has inlet AVCS and hence extra oil solenoids on the top of the rocker covers..........
