2006 UK leggy 3.0L H6 AT wur wur wur sounds from the front

Hi all,

I've got this odd wur wur wur wur noise, sounds like some machine from a sci-fi film, most noticeable 30-40mph coasting, coming from the front (maybe passenger side, but hard to tell), but there even on the gas. I thought d shaft inner, but changed that and the diff oil, and still there. Maybe wheel bearing? But It doesn't change with steering input like I'd have expected with a bearing.

The horrendous crunching sounds every so often are curtesy of Birmingham City Council (speed bumps...)

Cheers!

Update on this. When I bought the car the left front drive shaft outer CV was shot, so I replaced it. Once the car was back on the road this noise started happening so:

- I replaced the whole left front drive shaft - no joy
- I replaced the LHF wheel bearing - no joy

It does not change with engine RPM, so appears to be releated the drivetrain 'post' gearing (i.e. wheel speed).

The more I listen to it, it's coming from the under the car, and sometimes (about 30 ish mph) it resonates through the body, not a lot, just a little, but it's really difficult to pinpoint exactly where from. I think either directly under the handbrake area or under the dash

Anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers!

As it's a 5AT box maybe the equivalent of the output shaft bearing failures in the extension/transfer box of the 5MT box.

Propshaft intermediate bearing or even a UJ

How's your ATF ??

Thanks again. Here's to hoping it's the latter 2 and not the formare. I'll take the prop off and take a look.

Ok, think I have found the culpret. Probably a combination of 2 things I reckon;

a) the bush of the centre prop shaft bearing is 'soft' I'd say it moves way more than I'd think with moderate force
b) the front (t/m) end U-joint is notchy as hell

So I suspect the overplay in the bush pushed the u-joint past it's existing wear marks, and hence the noise!

I replaced the prop with a lower mileage (JDM) piece, problem still exist. For completeness, I dropped the sumps worth of the fluid and replaced with genuine Subaru red goodness - it definitely shifts better now but still makes the noise. Seems like it's the 'output shaft bearing' as suggested. I'm gunna get some quotes.... not sure I can face that 'on-the-drive' repair....

Hi all, I got a better video of this noise. It's most noticeable between 30-40 mph, and loudest at ~30-35 ish, where it even resonates lightly through the body.

Video is taken with the phone held against the tunnel carpet:

I've been recommended a placed in Cannock to AT trans work, but it's a 2hr 30 round trip up there for the diagnosis........ :(

Sorry about that mate. I used them years ago and when my gearbox went a few years back I got a quote off them but didn't get the work done there. I'm thinking maybe the multiple units there are owned by different people who do specific work but are part of the same name.

There is the gearbox part, another part that deals in accident repair and I know there was a MOT station. :wonder:

SOLVED!

The noise got worse, and my wife, who has younger ears than me, and been driving it more was like "the noise is coming from the front, and sometimes vibrates the steering wheel too, are you sure it's not a wheel bearing.....?" "Hummm, well not absolutely sure as I only changed the side that had the damaged CV...."

Anyway, £35 and 1 hours later, to quote Depeche Mode: "Enjoy the silence"

Hehe! http://www.uklegacy.com/forums/uploa...lt_biggrin.pnghttp://www.uklegacy.com/forums/uploa...lt_biggrin.png now I can start feeling the love for the car.
