Normal injector sounds or something to worry about?

Just had repairs done on my 04 WR1 due to a blown headgasket. Had new crank bearings, piston rings etc. a big job all in all. I hardly drove it before it went wrong so I don't know whether this sound is normal or not. I know scoobs are known for having loud lifter taps but is the metallic knocking sound on the videos normal?YouTube links to videos:https://youtu.be/N_xo331UKSshttps://youtube.com/shorts/-5BVhQHFwZY?feature=share

How much did rebuild cost if you don't mind me asking?

About 2 and a half grand for the engine, had some other bits done too

Ah thats not too bad. Reposted your link as wasn't really showing, sounds like injectors too me. Have you changed them?

Were they cleaned and flow tested? Injector spray pattern is as important as good spark plugs; no point in igniting a dribble.
It sounds too metallic and not clicky/tappy enough for injectors.

trouble with doing a video is the microphone tends to pick up every single little noice so its very hard to tell one from another lol

(its Steve dude who you had the car from )

what was the cause of your engine issues??

Headgasket failure, then score marks were found on the cylinder bores and needed new crank bearings

sounds more like a Detonation issue so I would be investigating why and poor injector flow is certainly a possibility

in general head gaskets don't simply fail without some other factor involved

Apologies, yes the initial cause of all of this was a jubilee clip breaking. Caused coolant to gush out of the bottom of the radiator so there wasn't really any warning signs until the temperature needle suddenly shot up to red and the engine cut out.

As stated above it is hard to tell with a mic from a phone recording, however I’ve attached a vid of mine from a while back as I had similar concern.

I believe the engine noise on the EJ can be quite loud, including the injector “tick”.

i find mine changes with the oil I use - there is helix ultra 5w40 in that vid. I’ll get another with the Fuschs 5w40 - will be different for sure.

The sound of your engine will change after a rebuild, especially if you change the pistons / clearances , ( the video is not conclusive as others already mentioned the microphone picks up everything ) a good way to tell if a single injectors is noisy is just to test unplug them one by one at tickover. However before doing that check the noise before and after warm up, mine sounds a bit louder after the revs drop off , and this is piston slap , that's not an issue to worry about really on forged pistons or even new builds with Sti Piston as the ring gaps could be set for more expansion. Generally the further you tune the more clearance is required.
Indeed if your engine was built for further power >350 bhp then you should expect it to be a bit more clacky.
In fact if you don't do it , you can end up with piston seize especially if you don't fully warm up before giving it a lot of throttle ( I have a T shirt on that one ).

PS I use Motul or Fuchs 10W 60 , so this sound effect change through warm up may be more pronounced than most.
