Am I right in thinking that the S2000s are about 240bhp??????????

Had a brief go with one tonight and although I managed to go from behind him to a about 5 car lengths in front on some open dual carriagway, I was suprised with how well it kept up.

BTW I am a stock STI5 Type R............................

I am really interested in the replies to this - I sold the P1 and have cash in the bank trying to decide between several cars - of which this is one. The list includes Ferrari 348, Porsche 993 T4 and (hairdresser flame await) a Boxster S). I like this car a lot (looks, cost, performance etc) and have yet to drive one but think it may be a good compromise for me... please give pros and cons fellow scoobynetters... :)

comment: but I wasted one in a straight line with both of us
trying. So much so he started some mad overtaking moves to get
by me and then away from me. Before I had a go at him I thought
it would have been close, but there was a noticeable diff in
performance. Also please note there were none of the preverbial
"twistie" bits involved.
Ps its an old STi series 1 I've got.

Colin Berry has recently bought one of these, hopefully he'll reply to this thread. In the meantime, i've been driven in his car and was suitably impressed. The quality of the car is fantastic in all areas. Bodywork/paint, interior and engine all look fantastic. The sound of the engine after about 6k is unreal!! Performance wise i'd say it's comparable to a MY99 impreza and this car was only recently run in. If you need more speed in a small 2 seater then you're mad. From a passenger point of view the steering felt sooo sharp. It seemed to go exactly where the driver wanted and reacted very quickly. I would definately advise not driving one unless you've got the money!!

Yeah totally agree, As I said I went from behind to a good 4 or 5 car lengths in front on a dead flat, straight bit of road and backed off as I got to 5th etc.

I just didn't expect it to be as quick as it was.
Undoubtably around some twisties it would be very different as you really need to wind those VTECs up etc.

Is your STI 1 standard?
I have a scoobysport downpipe to put on , which I am told will make a noticeable difference

I was looking to change the scoob to one of these. Took a test drive and liked the car, maybe not as urgent as the scoob but when it revs its got some go.

test drive one see what you think. Some drawbacks are thing like non moveable steering wheel but other than that nice car.

decided against it for the time being but you never know one day!

a whole different proposition in the wet I am told!

have a look over on www.S2k.com they have a BBS with a UK section several meets etc and are a friendly bunch.

also European import seems the way to go £4-5k under UK list!

Boxster all the way in my opinion... I love mine, read this weeks Autocar they do a back to back test with the S2000 and the new 2.7 Boxster. Porsche wins easily

Two guys at work had them under contract.. both were sent back as they had lots of problems with the gearboxes.. I think this is now sorted on newer cars... Apparently they also eat tyres.. The VTEC engines are awesome but totally different to a scoob...VTEC doesn't even engage to about 6000rpm sp you really have to rev the nuts off them.. But they thrive on it...

Personally I love them..

I got a test drive in an S2000 at the weekend (... and a very generous one at that ... 11 miles !)

to be honest, it didnt feel as quick as the Civic Type R I drove a few weeks ago.

Was I not driving the S2000 hard enough ? ... never really took it above 6-7000 rpm

Am I correct in saying peak power is something like 8000 rpm ?

To be honest I think I am correct in saying that the s2000 only really is alive between 6-9000rpm.The VVT really creates a jekyl and hyde experience

My missus used to have a MIVEC FTO which was quite boring till 6rpm , after that is was a total scream.

Not outright fast but good good fun

So what did it idle at then 3-4rpm ;)

my dad has just bought an my02 s2000gt and I have driven it extensively.

I have to say I am massively impressed.

Now that it has freed up, it is great fun. steering is sharp, build quality awesome, as a UK car it has 6 years and unlimited milage manufacturers warranty. Black with red leather.

The beauty is you can drive it under 6k with complete ease without knowing what else it can do.

You have to work it hard to get power out of it, but that just makes the occasion more special. It also means you are less inclined to speed which is easy when you have turbocharged torque.

It is also surprisingly tractable at low speed and the 6 speed box is a delight to use.

Engine note too is great. Have to say I eard bad things about the older car, but the tweaks to the new car make all the difference.

And dont assume a scoob will lose it in the twisties. Driven by the average man it will, but in controlled hands the drive of these things is fantastic.

btw. the new boxster didnt easily beat it. It won, but the reviewer said on a different day of the week it could have gone the other way.

In your position, I would consider a 348. Have spent much time in them and have developed a serious dislike for them especially in the wake of the 355 which is leagues a head in all departments, so much so that I would rather save for my first ferrari and go one step higher.

cant slate the boxster s though, price sets it apart from s2000, so much so that I would not go the extra, but behind the wheel, it is a gem.

Adam, don't you mean you wouldn't consider a 348?

as for the CTR being fast than the S2000 alot of people that drive them at work will agree with you on that the CTR does feel and seem faster don't know if it is on paper though.

Is a really nice car it would be my pick if I a) Had the money and b) In the market of a 2 seater sports car

AFAIK! Only visible add-on I can see to my car is an HKS
induction kit. ( green foam cone filter) if anyone knows
what it is. Think my car should have 260bhp so I'm asuming
that it was the difference in gearing that would have made
such a big difference between the two. Like I said earlier
for looks etc think the s2000 is probably the best lookin
2 seater( even better than the Boxter) and I would have one
in a minute so I'm in no way slagging the car of at all.
If you want to buy a classy two seater- TR6. ;)

I totally agree with Adam M, the S2000 is a much superior car to the boxster if you want something different. The Boxster is by all accounts better handling, better built and all that to55. BUT, the S2000 has possibly the best engine ever built. Like Adam said, you can drive it below 6k for a totally sweet normal drive (like a 150bhp engine) but nail it and it kepps revving, and revving, and revving, and revving, and, well, you get the point. Also its got one of the best hoods ever, 15secs up or down. You'll get much more respect than any boxster owner too. Oh, and the MY02 won't try to kill you on every corner either. I'm now expecting a hail of abuse from my pal Desy, as he's gone from an S2000 to a Boxster S... Bring it on!
Oh, and i forgot to say, it tops out at 156mph too, we can vouch for that, as we hit it on the way back from Le Mans last year.

With the S2000 if you booted it and he was below 6000RPM, I can well believe you can pull a few car lenghs, if he was in the VTEC which I doubt I think you may have been surprised :)

VTEC is all about keeping the Revs above 6000 and it goes to 9000, and when you keep it up there you will find it very difficult to pass one in the Dry, corners or not.

My Mum has a bright 02 S2000, and it sweeeeeeet, although she doesnt utilize the power as much as me :D ,

You've got to drive the honda like you've stolen it. It's get fun.
My my99 Impreza is easyer to drive fast, but it's not as much fun.
The power band is from 5500 revs to 9000 revs and you need to keep it in the sweet spot to get the most out it.You have to work the box(oo-er), but that's the fun.
It bascily feels like a race car on the road when the VETC comes in.
The Impreza's up for sale and I've got my sights set on one of these.
You can import one for about 21K, a real bargin.

I tried out an S2000. Because I like the way it looks and thought I might get one for the summer.

But, honestly, it doesnt ****in' go! The gear lever feels crap, too.

I think the S2000 is a little bit faster than an old shape UK Impreza from my experiments with one.

I havent driven an S2000, so I am guessing the VTEC starts at 6000rpm, like the CTR. If you drive the S2000 around below 6000rpm, then Im sure its not very quick. However, thrash it, and it will be quick.

I revved all the gears to the rev limiter. No go.

Contrary to what people say, I dont find that car bad at low revs. But it's not fast.
