STI 2016 DAB aerial adapter???

Hey guys i bought a connect 2 DAB adapter so wouldn't have to put in a separate DAB aerial and it doesn't fit! Spoke to the company they can't help and also can't find out off the net, anyone got any experience with using the standard DAB connector with a kenwood head unit?

Don Clark 28 January 2021 04:46 PM

What item have you actually purchased?? just "DAB adapter" doesn't mean much as Connect 2 make a number of DAB items that that could refer to.

One that should work even with a change of H/U

Sorry yeh it was this one. The link you sent me seems a lot as literally all i want to do is adapt the subaru DAB connector up to the kenwood like i did the normal am/fm aerial adapter. Even tried removing the outer casing and still wouldn't fit :-( I've attached the cable i bought and the subaru DAB connector. Just wanted an adapter as opposed to fitting new aerial

It maybe worth tracing the aerial feeder cable to it's next junction marked in yellow below and see which type of connection is used there.

AN17 is what you have shown in your post (coloured bLue)
AN19 is the next in line

It kinda looks like under the whole front console

JG483 29 January 2021 10:13 AM

I had the same problem as you when fitting my Kenwood to my 2016 STI. I should've done it properly as per Don's advice above but ended up just removing the plastic housing altogether and fitting the metal sleeve and pin receiver directly onto the DAB socket on the Kenwood and it's held up fine for the last year no worries.

timjohnson 29 January 2021 11:05 AM

Yeh that's what the company that i bought the adapter off told me to do, i tried it, took it off really carefully but still wouldn't fit directly onto the back of the kenwood!!! Did u just force it on?

JG483 29 January 2021 11:13 AM

I dismantled the subaru DAB connector to leave only the metal sleeve and the pin receiver inside it (I had to remove the teflon core surrounding the inner pin as it wouldn't fit - quite a faff). This just slides onto the Kenwood DAB aerial socket. You can compress the metal sleeve a little to make it hold on better. Then I pushed the head unit into the dash and hoped for the best! It worked though but maybe I was lucky. I did think about soldering it on which might be a better solution as I could not find a connecter anywhere of that Subaru size.

This is what i did and wouldn't fit, do u mean u stripped it more to fit?

JG483 29 January 2021 11:28 AM

Yeah I had to take out that teflon inner which leaves a socket pin to push onto the pin on the DAB socket of the stereo, and the outer metal sleeve goes over the stereo outer sleeve if that makes sense. Try it and turn it on to see if you have a signal.

timjohnson 29 January 2021 11:32 AM

Sorry to sound stupid but when you say the "teflon inner" do u mean the white inner surround bit just leaving the pin? If so how did u do that!?
my only worry is putting it back to standard when the time comes to put original back in if ever sell the car

JG483 29 January 2021 11:35 AM

If you loosen the silver tabs on the metal outer you can remove the white plastic then refit the metal outer. I was also worried about putting it back to standard but I can't see that every happening anyways as the standard head unit is utter garbage and when I do eventually get round to selling the car the stereo will be old tech by then and not really worth much so will just keep it in. It's miles better than the Subaru unit with sat nav and wireless carplay so can't see anyone complaining!

timjohnson 29 January 2021 11:38 AM

Ah yeh course! I just want to install another bloody aerial tbh, i might try that then, but of a bodge job but can see if works! Thanks for all your help too :-)

JG483 29 January 2021 11:42 AM

I tried the extra aerial and it was **** tbh. Much better using the Subaru one if you can managed to bodge the connection. Good luck! Let us know how you get on.

timjohnson 29 January 2021 11:46 AM

Yeh i heard the weren't much kop! I'll let u know

timjohnson 29 January 2021 05:49 PM

Well i stripped the cable again and tried to place it in the DAB antenna on the Kenwood and no joy unfortunately just said antenna error and no service :-( this is what the cable looked like, did yours?

And while I'm here does anyone know the size of the door speakers in the front and rear to save me taking the panels off 1st?

Don, I don't suppose you have the rest of that diagram...I'm retro fitting a DAB aerial to my Legacy and it would be helpful if I knew what kind of plug AN11 was :)

Don Clark 06 January 2023 09:57 AM

It will be the reverse of AN15 shown above.

MY15> UK/European WRX STI Sharkfin 3 pin aerial socket (AN15)
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.sco...f2bc5c4e5f.jpg

Although I'm not sure how this helps fitting a DAB aerial to a JDM BR9 ???

trails 06 January 2023 10:03 AM

Thanks Don :)

I've got the aerial already so have sent a photo of that connector to Connects2, I'm just seeing if I can identify the right lead myself, and perhaps make my own lead up...the diagram above is the first time I've seen where the different wires are attached.

Sorry, didn't see your edit...I'm going to be drilling a hole in the roof to fit it :D

Don Clark 06 January 2023 10:47 AM

Are you saying you have a MY15> WRXSTI aerial that you want to use just for DAB??

If so it probably won't work due to being AM/FM range only.

If you have replaced the headunit for a suitable UK DAB unit you would probably be better off with something like this and the associated cables listed.

Bugger, this is sounding like a face/palm interface...this is the one I have, I assumed it would be DAB but I did wonder why there was only one output. Doh.

we simply added this sort of thing

Thanks Alyn, I did buy one of those originally, but I just couldn't get on with the aesthetics...I know that sounds a bit daft when talking about the pig that is a gen5 Leggy :lol1:

The UK version is p/n 86321VA500** where ** is the colour suffix

In Japan 3 versions are listed for V10 models (different freq ranges used to UK)
For Wagon p/n 86321VA000**superceded by *VA001**
or for Saloon/Sedan p/n 86321VA100**/VA101**
Specifically for the S208 p/n 86321VA130

Version 100/101 for sedan/saloon seems to have the same plug as UK versions

Mine is the Saloon/Sedan 86321VA101 variant...it says VL9 Sedan on the rubber seal too.

I guess it will be available for sale then, thanks for your help Don :)
