TYPE R FULL RESTORE top to bottom

hi guys

have started the rebuild process on my version 4 type R ,, the plan is to restore as much of it back to better than original as I can

underbody completely stripped and taken back to bare metal , any rust issues sorted as we all know some will be found lol then three coats of aching primer and three coats of raptor bed coat in body colour so the underbody will look as good as the top lol

all subframes , diff carriers , anti roll bars and arms will be blasted and powder coated (some black and some pink)

new bushes though out aswell as new drop links and other such items

hubs are being stripped aswell with new bearings front and rear and these will also be powder coated

brakes are being fully rebuilt back to original spec and powder coated aswell

brand new set of KYB adjustable suspension (not coilovers)

brand new fuel tank and filler neck

all bolts are being blasted and zinc plated before refitting

this is all being done as we speak so should be back with me in the next few weeks as iv brought all the parts already

once this process is complete its then going off to the bodyshop I use to have the top have of the car full painted back in its original white

so it should look like a very nice car again once finished

I will post some pics of the progress once I have some

It's going to be better than new :)
Are you doing the work yourself or do you have someone to help?

NOSSY_89 28 January 2021 12:55 AM

Brilliant @domino46

I need to refresh the bottom of mine so will be keeping a look on your colour combination

prob no thread just yet

this one was brought with minor damage and is a CAT N car ,,, so its a repair one but iv already done all the mechanical repairs so just need to wait a couple of months till iv got some spare cash to get the front wing done on it aswell as that has a couple of dents and the wheels need a refurb, but the car is lovely and a credit to the last owner ,, im very surprised they wrote it off for such minor damage , to give you a idea of what was done damage wise

parked with the front wheel turned out slightly ,, car coming down the road caught the wheel and clipped the wing

so to repair was
steering rack
front arm
drop link
bottom ball joint
plus the front wing but that could prob be done paintless once I get a chance to ask somewhere

hasn't cost me much in parts an was about a days work swapping it all over

NOSSY_89 31 January 2021 12:34 AM

I'm surprised the previous owner didn't fight it because it sounds like the insurance went off book value. They must based it on the fact that its a 16 year old car and not a WR1 etc.

he was quite happy with the pay out for it and got more than he paid for the car originally ,, from what iv been told it may have been due to back order of parts and the Insurance company having to pay for a hire car until the parts were ready and that could of been a while so makes it expensive for them lol

either way I ended up with a cheap WR1 that was a easy fix , and I know the history of the car so that helps aswell ,, its not perfect but its a car that was being used not hidden away so its got areas that need some love lol

domino46 31 January 2021 12:52 AM

quick type R update

dreaded rust has been found ,, but that was expected really as I told them to look for it as I dont want any half jobs or it returning later on

so new inner and outer sills ,, they are not to bad but will have the whole lot replaced just to be safe

and a load of the captive bolts from the rear end have come lose so they now have to cut into the rear end to replace all the captive nuts with new ones lol

all things I expected really so no drama

Thats good he got paid out. Thought he might have been shafted by the insurance company. Its not your first thought to fight with them now that I think about it.

What about the sills and front wings, rust likes to hide there :)

all sills are being replaced , front wings look ok ,,, but this is underside only at the mo ,, front wings will come under doing the top half once its done and off to the bodyshop as its being painted after they have finished the bottom

Kaosone 24 February 2021 07:20 AM

I want one.

Such a premium price for the cool factor of having 2 doors though

I might have to import an RS 2.5 NA from the states, restore the shell, convert it to left hand drive & STI swap it

I brought this one about two year ago just before the prices started going mental lol ,now rusty ones go for 15k+,, I brought it to restore and sell on rather than keeping it myself ,,, only subaru im interested in keeping is my wrc build the rest are all for sale when finished

Kaosone 24 February 2021 10:38 AM
