My brother in law is purchasing a PC. He has been given the choice of Win 98 SE or Win 2000 to come with the PC. Which should he go for?
PC is a Pentium 4, 1600mhz, 128MB Ram and 40Gb hard disc drive. I only have Win 98 SE and don't know much on the Win 2000, to be able offer him advice. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Wrexy. |
W2000. A lot quicker and much more stable than W98.
I would suggest getting the PC with 256MB or maybe 512MB of RAM - then it will really fly. |
definitely windows 2000! the new hardware will run windows 2000 a lot better than windows 98.
|
2000 here as well. as ChrisB said up teh RAM if you can to 512Mb if you can! :D
|
Just to echo Suba, much improved driver support as well under W2000. Plug and Play works more often than not on 2000.
Driver support for W98 is already starting to disappear. |
Push for XP !
|
yes, if at all possible, swap the windows 98 / windows 2000 license for windows XP. it is a better operating system.
p/s i dont work for microsoft!!! |
bleh no! XP is bloated and still has some driver issues, although SP1 fixes alot.
Go for Win2kpro SP2, the power users choice :) SP3 will be out soon as well. |
surley it depends on what he wants the PC for? Win2000 great for work/business. Win98SE still great for games.
|
I used to dual boot W2000/98SE.
Last re-install but one I left a partition free for Win98 and never got round to re-installing it. Last re-install I've gone with W2000 only. MOHAA and UT both run great under W2000. I've got XP Pro on my laptop and I'm well impressed so far. It comes out of hibernate and is ready to use before my desktop PC has even finish POSTing. |
nimbus naw u dun need 98 for games, win2k is fine with everything, apart from some old obsolete dos games.
|
Really? Must just be my laptop then... ;)
|
Which would be of what specification... ;)
|
nimbus yeh man, as long as its a fairly recent spec'd box. Laptops arent usually good for games :)
|
2k pro ne day
|
Thanks for all your advice peeps. :) I'll pass on all the info to him and I'll also advise him to go for the Win 2000 pro. It's mainly for home use so it should be fine, going off the advice you gave me.
Cheers, Wrexy. |
