Building a 2.1 stroker
 

Hi guys I'm new to the group and fairly new to the subaru world. Basically I'm looking in to changing my engine to a 2.1 stroker. I'm not massively clued up on engines and stuff. So just here for some advice if possible. Basically what I want to know is what is involved with building a stroker. I know you have to upgrade everything. I was wondering if someone could help me by listing everything that I need to get. I will be getting my mechanic to build the engine but want to know everything I need before I go to him. If anyone could write a list up for me I'd really appreciate it

Well, it's a bit more than buying parts and putting them together..............unless you've had all the precision milling done beforehand. Reliability comes from established builders who have extensive experience with 2.1's; that's the route I would go if I was in your situation. Does your mechanic build Subaru engines for a living?

You will need the EJ257 crank with correct rods and pistons to match your bores. Then bearings (gaskets and so many other little things too). A few different ways to do this buy a kit based on your bores after they have been checked and machined or speak to Alyn @ AS Performance and he could build you a kit.

I don't know your mechanic so can't comment on his knowledge or capability. I think the apprehension others have mentioned is more to do with will he know or put the time in to work out specific tolerances etc. Tolerance for one engine/build will be different to another.

You have to remember time is money, garages don't have time to search the internet for hours looking at forums etc when there are other jobs that have a much larger margin. Thats why in most instances its cheaper to look for parts yourself if they give you a list.

Changing you engine to 2.1 Why exactly do you want to do 2.1 ? I'm not being funny here , but what are you expecting from your new engine ? By this I mean are you looking for a daily runner with loads of torque , or
a high revving engine to do a bit of weekend track work. And what level of power will you wish to achieve and are willing to pay for ?

For example other capacities might appeal more, eg a S/H 2.5ltr block rebuilt with suitable modifications can combined with your existing cylinder heads.

The issue with the 2.1 stroker is that you have to change / rework the crankshaft / have the block surface ground. If you are doing that typically you would use at least the slightly more durable Sti pistons or even go for a forged set & new rods.

A more simple alternative (the way I went ) is to use a 2.0 block over bored 93mm and use the standard stroke 75mm that gives you appx 2040cc even building this and reconditioning your original block / polishing crankshaft / new oil pump/ bearings
will cost around £2500. Mine was a EJ207 block built by Wilks Engines Shipley with Mahle pistons and Manley rods ARP bolts Race Bearings and a new crank and is built to run >400 bhp but that's >£3000

You're looking at something like £5.5k drive in drive out (includes tear down, clean prepare & paint short block, forged internals / stroker build, rebuild, running in & remapping. Or they'll build you a shortblock & get your mechanic to fit your heads & install it, but it will still need mapping afterwards.
