Just seen a trade ad in CC for a road 6R4 with 350 miles on the clock, a Mountune engine (?) for £24,950 - if I had the cashish I'd have a look!

There's a Beetle for 38k on the same page - not a chance... :)

a friend of mine rally's one and they are rather rapid to say the least and sound fantastic if its the normal engine but some end up with turbos on them i dunno why tho

chopper 19 June 2002 09:35 AM

A friend of mine used to have one of these . He had a set of ear defenders hung over the rear view mirror for driver and passenger- it was THAT loud! A silly, silly car. :)

astraboy 19 June 2002 11:41 AM

I'd rob a bank if it would mean getting hold of one.
Obscenely fast car...
astraboy.

Surely 25k for an almost unused 6R4 is going to be a fairly sound investment. Not many Group B cars around!

Used to obsessed by these as a kid - wanted a 6R4 and an HSR Chevette.. Ended up with a Chevette ES - not quite the same...

dogmaul 19 June 2002 12:22 PM

normally the 6r4 in that condition is about £40-50k

ukhuskynox 19 June 2002 12:54 PM

Wish I could have bought the one I was offered, back when they banned Group B cars...:( was very very cheap

Great noise, plenty of low down grunt. Pretty amazing to see them still competetive in domestic rally series.

IIRC 3.0 normally aspirated V6, which was the basis of the Jag XJ220 engine. Will Gollop twin turbo'd his about 10-12 years ago for about 700bhp, which was also sleeved down to about 2.0 for the regulations.

I used to clean an ex Malcolm Wilson 6R4, and an ex Stig Blonqvist RS200 when I worked at the Grampian Transport Museum - both owned by the same lucky (Rich) guy. The RS200 cost him in the region of £200k.

Sounds like a good museum piece this one with that mileage.

Mike.

nice HSR chevette for you its now in different hands but still damn quick

IanWatson 19 June 2002 04:33 PM

Nice one Dogmaul - just canna get enough of those Shove-its.

70's/early 80's wish list is getting longer

6R4
HSR Chevette
Mercedes SEL 6.9
Lotus Sunbeam

All in brown with matching velour-look trim would be nice...

brickboy 19 June 2002 04:39 PM

Ooooh yes -- nice wheels. 100mph in around 8 seconds.

It always amused me to think that XJ220 owners basically got the 6R4 motor ... which was developed by taking the Buick / Rover 3500 V8 and chopping off two cylinders ;-)

Skippy 20 June 2002 08:42 AM

IanWatson 20 June 2002 12:02 PM

Skippy - that's the company advertising in CC - someone please buy it!!!!

IWatkins 20 June 2002 12:11 PM

Will Gollops 6R4 is now competing in the Midlands Hillclimb Championship running approx 750bhp.

See: http://www.powerstation.org.uk/Projects_Page.html for videos (about halfway down the page).

Having sat in this car during testing, I can easily say it is the quickest thing I'll ever be in :D (Head mashed into headrest under acceleration)

Cheers

I had the dubious honour of co-driving the last car in the F2 section of the Minehead Rally a coulple of years ago, it was a GpN Nova GSi. The ran the Open category cars behind F2 with a five minute interval, the first open car was Andy Burton in a 6R4. He managed to almost catch us in the first 3.2 mile forest stage, and we weren't hanging about. Following comments from both us and him, the organisers increased the gap to 10 minutes to give us time to get out of the way:D

Even with today's WRC cars filtering down, the 6R4 is still one of the most awesome rally cars around, in the right hands.

GREEN SCOOBY 20 June 2002 11:05 PM

its the loadest car ive ever heard, sounds like thunder crackers

DIXIE 23 June 2002 11:24 AM

My last rally car was a chevette 2.6 HS fully five linked jobbie. Bloody awesome. :D

Engine was a bit unreliable so i put a Formula3 2 litre in and put rally cams in that. My kind of car. :D
