Hi I have aquestion for you people out there

If you take a ej20 engine with the following
1/Forged pistons- eg sti, cosworth, je etc
2/Billet conrods eg Argo,crower,etc
3/closed deck-crack and tested
4/Large injectors- eg 720-850cc
5/ Large frontmount eg greddy or hks etc
6/Good fuel pump
7/large fuel lines eg dash 8-10
8/Good ecu -eg motec or autronic
9/Strengthened head studs
10/polished and ground crank
11/ huge cams- solid lifters etc
12/ large capable turbo-garrett or turnetics etc
The question is with-out stroking the engine what horsepower can be achieved-both in extreme cases and safer applications- Im not worried about the driveline at this stage as I know that will need looking at as well- can anyone share experiences
eg dogbox syncros etc
Regards

Safe power... 100 / 200 bhp?? depends on oil pump, oil used, big end bearings... ;) max ???? 400 - 500 +

Depends what boost you want to run and how many minutes you want it to run for... might not be driveable either!

I would say 400 max.

200/litre is bordering on reliable.

craig H did exactly what you suggest and his engine has run fine.

dont know if you mentioned it, but the standard crank even machined with smallr big end journals is good for well over 600bhp.

As in the rigolis and other massive power output cars in aus.

and by the way,

you dont need injectors that large,

you should get away with 550 for 400bhp, with an uprated fuel pump, and always have the option of higher pressure.

Water injection would be a wise move too.

Adam
You mentioned Craig H- how much hp does he run ?/
what has he done to his motor??

You would only use injectors that size at the drag strip, with boost maxed out at about 27PSI or higher.

I you were going to that length you should o-ring the heads. plus look at 1998 WRX heads (large bucket solid lifter) huge flow characteristics.

The problem then is splitting the bores under boost, need to remove the bores, that's all I am saying.

I would say 600 - 650cc max, at around 380-400Hp

After all those mods the max power output comes down to boost levels and turbo.

How about starting with an EJ25 instead?

Have you checked the Riggoli website in auz ? They are putting out 500bhp daily drivers !!!

ustolemyname??stevieturbo 19 June 2002 02:04 AM

The Rigolis have a website....Share it with us please Andy..

what is all this crap about larger injectors for drag racing?

do you run stupid air fuel ratios on te drag strip that you dont on the road?

surely if you want 400bhp road or strip, then you supply fuel for 400?

if you want to do that, make sure the fuel pump can do it and th 550s will have no problem.
why would you need larger ones? more fuel would mean running richer, if it didnt then you would need more air which would mean 400 wasnt really your target in the first place.

Andy.F 20 June 2002 01:15 AM

"do you run stupid air fuel ratios on te drag strip that you dont on the road?"

Actually, Adam....YES !

But not richer ! I run a very weak mixture for maximum efficiency. The EGT's / combustion temps would not be sustainable for longer periods.
On an 11 second drag run with short gearing allowing the engine to rev freely, you can run some 'ambitious' settings ;)

Andy,

To be fair, Adam was saying that you "wouldn't" use bigger injectors for the drag strip.

And like you say, it's somewhat different tuning a car for an "11 sec' run", as against day to day, or for drivng around a track.

Mark.

Pavlo 20 June 2002 10:16 AM

If you were running alcohol fuel, you would be looking at an AFR of 8-10, so bigger injectors would be required.

Mark

Why be fair when you can be pedantic ;) :D :D

Trout... 20 June 2002 08:02 PM

Err - 625bhp!

Well that is what Pentii Arikkla - or was is Per Eklund - anyway - his rally cross car ran around 625 from an uprated two litre engine - monster boost tho - and it didn't last more than a weekend.

Got bored rebuilding and switched to a Saab two litre turbo

Trout :D

We run larger injectors on the strip because we crank the boost from 18PSI to about 27PSI and to do that we need the larger injectors or we melt pistons, even with alcohol and water injection.
