Will Heskey be given another chance or will Sven give someone else a go

paulr 17 June 2002 09:54 PM

IN.....but only just:)

planky 17 June 2002 09:55 PM

I wouldnt think Sven will change the squad but i think Sven see something special??? in Heskey but what,i havent got the foggiest.
one goal doesnt make him a good player.

subster 17 June 2002 10:01 PM

Vassell must be wondering what he has to do
It was on the radio today Heskey has scored 3 goals in 24 games for England

subster 17 June 2002 10:03 PM

They were saying the Brazil defence seem to lose concentration, I think owen and vassell would be the people to take advantage of this

stephen emery 17 June 2002 10:41 PM

heskey has no bottle , get hi out now, he seems to need pats on the head to perform. this is the biggy you can't aford to have some big softy out there .

i am with subster, but give teddy the job m8

steve

subster 17 June 2002 10:44 PM

Alright Steve, how are you

stephen emery 17 June 2002 10:47 PM

:(

stephen emery 17 June 2002 10:48 PM

footie going well though

markr1963 17 June 2002 10:52 PM

If you're going to play him, play in the middle where he can use strength. Seems to be ineffective out on the left.

Better still, play Sheringham.

Mark

Scooby_Manchester 18 June 2002 12:58 AM

I feel sorry for Vassel cause he was the best player vs Sweden but him and Owen are too similar.

I think Heskey should play cause the Brazilians are cr@p in the air and Heskey could use his strength with Sheringham coming on for the last 20/30mins

We're gonna win!!!!!!!

jasey 18 June 2002 08:07 AM

Heskey is made for this game - he'll make 2 of Owen's 3 goals ! :D

subster 18 June 2002 07:57 PM

Heskey is crap in the air and on the floor

GarnetFox 18 June 2002 08:22 PM

Little bit of useless information for you:

Heskey went to my sister's school in Leicester, the City of Leicester Comp I think it was. They were in the same year. Infact they were in the same Maths class. They sat together in Maths class. That was when they weren't playing football together in breaks. :D

Sisters friend went on holiday to the Bahamas and saw that Heskey was staying there too. The friend went up to Heskey to get an autograph and mentioned my sister (just to see if she was lying I think.). To the friends surprise, Heskey did indeed remember my sister, the maths classes, and the football, and they had a convo about her while sitting by the pool. :D

That's our little family claim to fame anyway! :)

dfullerton 18 June 2002 08:32 PM

stephen emery 18 June 2002 10:33 PM

heskey is a pussy , get rid of him

uncle buck 18 June 2002 10:37 PM

I think out - he's too slow... Vassell (however it's spelt) is a better bet, and don't forget to bring on Ted at some stage ;)

JohnMcC 19 June 2002 12:57 AM

I dont think Heskey is the greatest player this country has produced but I think a lot of his hard work (when hes in the right position ie up the middle) goes unnoticed.

I think one of the keys to why Heskey plays is he is alongside his club team mate Owen.

Swap him for Sheringham in the second half and Teddy can complete the 4-0 rout of Brazil with a glancing header from a Beckham free-kick ;)

:D

SwinYE5 19 June 2002 04:42 AM

Heskey is sh1t, end of story. I just can't see what managers see in him, just like Houllier selling Fowler because he couldn't get many games with Heskey in the side! Is he mad?!

HOWEVER, Teddy would struggle to last the whole game and I would prefer him for the last half an hour to the first hour. Vassell and Owen are too similar, it could work but it's not worth taking the risk. That leaves Fowler who can run a bit hot and cold, I'm not too sure about him in HUGE games like these are now. So, I guess we're stuck with Heskey!

Who said we had many world class strikers when trying to pick 5 for the WC, having to leave out Cole and Phillips? I have to say that our strikers don't look as good as people first thought when you look at them. Vassell definitely deserves another chance though, but will he get it? I can't really see another striker apart from Owen, Heskey or Teddy being on the pitch now we're really down to the nitty gritty.....

JohnMcC 19 June 2002 05:26 AM

Hes not wonderful but I think calling him sh*t is OTT. He did some great work in the Argentina game, dropping a bit deeper and nicking the ball, making tackles etc... We're gonna need to play a similar game to that. I think his power could cause them problems.

Granted, he aint as good a goalscorer as Teddy or Fowler though.

When everything gels and he and Owen are on song they work well together. I think part of Sven's success that was mentioned on the telly has been with working with small units of players that play week in week out together. e.g Seaman, Cole and Campbell have an understanding at Arsenal, as do Ferdinand and Mills from Leeds. The bonus is that all 5 seem to be working well together too.

Then youve got Butt, Scholes and Beckham all on the same wavelength from Man U, with the Liverpool guys Heskey and Owen up front. As a bonus, Sheringham has played many games with the Man U guys in midfield, so he still has a good understanding with them, and the same could be said for Fowler and Owen.

Sinclair is the odd one out :D but he seems to have been working well with Cole down the left.

I think the point is that it isnt necessarily who is the best player in each individual position (unless you are dealing with a truly world class player) but how they understand and play with the players around them. So, if two players' abilities are similar but one could be said to be slightly superior to the other, you would quite likely go with the slightly inferior player if he had a better understanding with the guys around him.

:)

Keep him in the starting line-up definitely, OK he's not the worlds best striker but, he does run defenders ragged and worry them with his height & size. The manager will use him to wear out an already hopeless defence, then bring Sheringham on with 30 mins to go to make mincemeat of what is left.
Remember this game is in the middle of the afternoonin a hot & humid climate, so the strikers are going to be bo11oxed after an hour, there is no way Sven will leave either of his strikers on for the full game, so to start with his two quickest (Owen & Vassell) would be madness. He knows what he is doing!

Funkii Munkii 19 June 2002 02:03 PM

Er.....OUT for F*cks sake are we still discussing this Mutt??

So he mis hit a ball and scored only his third in 24, Darius and Michael then Teddy for the last 30 minutes should do it.

Dave

subster 19 June 2002 09:16 PM

Could you see Brazil having a striker in the side who is crap on the ball, has no skill and has no confidence but chases back well
He would be tinning corn beef in Argentina

Bad Bads 19 June 2002 10:35 PM

He may be overrated but he is the perfect foil for Owen.Vassel and Owen didn't work against Sweden as they are too similar.
I think Sven is a great believer in a big man little man front two and I don't think that Teddy would last all game,so I am afraid we are stuck with Heskey!
COME ON ENGLAND.

Paul.
